River hosts Racing with opposite goals on the line: climb the table or crash out of the knockout round
On Sunday at El Monumental, for matchday 14 of the Clausura 2026, River is looking to break into the top eight while Racing fights for its playoff life one step from elimination.
Some games don't need any dressing up to build anticipation, and this River-Racing clash is one of them. On Sunday, October 25, at 7:15 p.m. (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay time; 5:15 p.m. for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador), El Monumental hosts the Academia for matchday 14 of Zone B in the Clausura 2026, with TNT Sports broadcasting for Argentine audiences and Disney+ carrying the match for the rest of Latin America.
What makes this matchup intriguing is that both sides are looking at the standings from completely different places. River wants to keep climbing to crack the zone's top eight. Racing, on the other hand, has its back against the wall: one more draw and it's goodbye to the Group B knockout round. That simple, and that dramatic.
How both teams arrive
The Nunez side is coming off a rout, a commanding 3-0 win over Belgrano, and that victory helped paper over what had been a shaky stretch, just one loss in the last nine matches of the tournament. Leonardo Ponzio's squad knows everything is in their own hands if they want to lock up a spot among the zone's top eight and also move up the Annual Table, which is no small detail since that's what determines qualification for the continental cup they'll play in 2027. Chasing that goal, the names to watch are the usual suspects: Gonzalo Montiel, Thiago Almada, Angel Correa and Sebastian Driussi.
Racing, for its part, has one stat it can hold onto: it's lost just one of its last four matches. But the problem is that "not so bad" isn't good enough anymore. The club is coming off a 1-1 draw with Independiente in the derby, and Sebastian "Chirola" Romero's team finds itself in a do-or-die spot: they can't afford anything less than a win from here on out, because even the smallest draw would knock them out of the knockout round. For the Academia, the players to watch are Facundo Cambeses, Adrian Martinez, Lautaro Diaz and Gonzalo Escudero.
The most recent meeting between the two sides also favors the Millonario: River won 2-0 on the road on April 12, 2026, with goals from Facundo Colidio and Driussi. That's no guarantee of anything, but it's the last memory etched in before this new chapter.
With all of that on the table, Sunday at El Monumental carries far more than three points at stake: there's a dream of continuing to climb for one side, and an urgent need to avoid elimination for the other. Rarely does a matchday 14 fixture carry this much pressure on both sides of the field.
