River has won just three of its last ten clasicos against Argentina's big clubs
The hardest pill to swallow is Boca, who have won the last two meetings, one on the road and one at the Monumental.
Ten clasicos, just three wins. That is the real picture of River Plate when it squares off against Argentine soccer's other big clubs lately, and the numbers don't add up the way any River fan would want.
The data stings even more when you zoom in on the recent history against Boca, Racing, Independiente and San Lorenzo. Of the last ten matchups against that group of rivals, River has only come away with the win three times. The rest has been split between draws and, what hurts most, losses to its fiercest rival of all.
Because that's where it really hurts: Boca has won the last two meetings in a row. First came a 2-0 defeat at La Bombonera during the 2025 Clausura, and then another blow followed, this time at home, a 1-0 loss at the Monumental in the 2026 Apertura. Losing to the archrival once is already hard to swallow; doing it twice in a row, with the second coming at home, is a different story altogether.
A bit of relief against Racing in between
Not everything in this review was bad news. The most recent clasico River played in this stretch came in October, and that's where it managed to snap a losing streak: River beat Racing at the Monumental, the very team that had been the last to beat it in this kind of matchup, back in April.
In other words, Racing was both the executioner and, months later, the victim that let River celebrate in a clasico once again. A statistical wash within the statistics themselves, if you want to look at it that way.
The bottom line leaves River with a clear item of unfinished business: whenever the schedule puts any of these four historic rivals in front of them, the team hasn't been able to assert its usual dominance. And when the name on the other side is Boca, the problem gets bigger, because there's no room for error there: the last two meetings both went the wrong way, one on the road and the other, the more painful one, at home.
With this backdrop, every upcoming clasico on the calendar is going to carry some extra weight. River needs to reverse a trend that, with three wins in ten games against the big clubs, doesn't match the prestige of a team that has historically gone toe to toe with anyone.
