Roma Rout Fiorentina 4-0 as Malen Hits Hat Trick at the Olimpico
The Dutchman scored three goals off assists from Dybala on an afternoon of total home dominance.

Four goals, a hat trick and a rout that was evident from early on: Roma ran over Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico and closed out the match 4-0. The headline act had a name, Donyell Malen, who scored three of the four goals and turned what looked like it could be an even matchup into a walk in the park.
The opener came in the 26th minute, when Malen connected on a left-footed strike from the center of the box after a pass from Paulo Dybala. It was the reward for a dominance that had already been building: Roma had given warning earlier with shots from Dybala and Rodrigo Mora, and a header from Evan Ndicka that went close. Fiorentina, for their part, had a couple of flashes through Marco Brescianini and Cher Ndour, but without seriously troubling David de Gea.
The second half was a demolition. Barely six minutes after the restart, in the 51st minute, Malen struck again, curling one into the top left corner, once more assisted by Dybala. Not even a quarter of an hour later, in the 59th minute, he completed his treble with a close-range finish, again with Dybala's fingerprints on the pass. Three assists from the Argentine for three goals from the Dutchman: the partnership clicked perfectly all afternoon.
Fiorentina tried to respond with substitutions. Moise Kean came on and had a couple of shots that David de Gea kept out at the near post, and Franco Mastantuono tried his luck from a direct free kick without success. But any hope of a comeback was buried in the 85th minute, when Niccolò Pisilli, on from the bench, poked home the fourth goal from close range to seal the result completely.
The Numbers Behind the Dominance
The stats confirm what was seen on the field: Roma controlled the ball, created more chances and were far sharper near the opposing box.
| Stat | Roma | Fiorentina |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 61.1 | 38.9 |
| Shots | 17 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 4 |
| Big chances | 4 | - |
| Corners | 2 | 3 |
| Passes | 538 | 343 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 11 |
The estimated xG based on the match's shots also reflects the gap: 2.932 for Roma against just 0.554 for Fiorentina. It's a figure calculated after the final whistle, not a prediction, but it makes clear the scoreline was no accident: Roma created the clearer chances throughout the 90 minutes.
What's striking is that the buildup didn't point to such a lopsided gap. Our projection before the match gave Roma a 53% chance of winning, with a 26% chance of a draw and 21% for Fiorentina, and the expected goals pointed to a much tighter contest (1.79 for Roma against 1.06 for Fiorentina, for a total of 2.86). The reality ended up far from that balanced forecast: Roma didn't just win, they did it with a forcefulness that far exceeded what was expected.
What the Result Means
With this win, Roma reach three points in Serie A with a goal difference of +4, in a season start where nearly every team still shares the same points total after the first matchday. Fiorentina, on the other hand, are left with zero points and a goal difference of -4, the worst mark in the table at this early stage. It was an afternoon to forget in Rome, and proof that when Malen and Dybala click like this, any opposing game plan can be reduced to nothing.
