Ronald Araujo leaves for Liverpool after eight years at Barcelona

The Uruguayan defender closes out his Barca spell as captain, having won three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and made 213 appearances.

Ronald Araujo leaves for Liverpool after eight years at Barcelona

Eight years is a long time: enough to make your debut as a barely known kid, to wear the captain's armband and to end up becoming one of the symbols of an era at Barcelona. That cycle came to a close on Monday, when Ronald Araujo was officially unveiled as a new Liverpool player and, almost at the same time, posted a farewell letter on social media to the Catalan club and its fans.

The Uruguayan defender arrived at Barca in August 2018 from soccer in his home country, where he had played for Rentistas and Boston River. It was not an immediate leap to the first team: he had to work his way up before officially debuting in October 2019. From there, he kept growing until he became a fixture in the Barca backline and, in the most recent season, the team's captain.

The numbers back up that journey. Araujo played 213 games in the blue and red shirt and chipped in 14 goals, no small figure for a center back who often had to shoulder the toughest defensive assignments. On the trophy front, the Uruguayan won three La Liga titles (2022/23, 2024/25 and 2025/26), two Copa del Rey titles (2020/21 and 2024/25) and three Spanish Super Cups (2022/23, 2024/25 and 2025/26). A trophy case that makes clear he was not just along for the ride, but an active part of the club's recent success.

The message the Uruguayan shared on social media sums up those years well:

Time to take on a new challenge. After 8 years, I'm taking with me so many wonderful memories, lessons learned and, above all, so many people who were part of this journey. Forever grateful, culers!Ronald Araujo

A new home at Anfield

Hours after that farewell came the other side of the coin: the welcome to his new club. Araujo wasted no time showing his excitement for the change of scenery, with a much more direct, soccer-first message, typical of someone whose head is already in what comes next.

My new home. Let's go, Reds!Ronald Araujo

Does an era that began with an almost anonymous academy kid and ends with a captain whose trophy cabinet is full really close just like that? That is what the facts say. Now the Uruguayan defender faces the challenge of adapting to the Premier League, to a different soccer language and to a different kind of demand, but with the experience of having been a key figure in one of the biggest locker rooms in the world. Barcelona loses a recent leader of its defense; Liverpool adds a center back with a winning resume and still room to keep growing.
