San Diego blows a 2-0 lead against Houston Dynamo FC, settles for 3-3 on stoppage-time goal
Guilherme's brace sparked Houston Dynamo FC's comeback, but Pirani struck in the 85th minute to deny a San Diego side that dominated the match.

Just 21 minutes had gone by at Snapdragon Stadium and San Diego was up 2-0. The match ended 3-3. In between, Houston Dynamo FC scored three goals in 13 minutes to flip a result that looked all but settled, and San Diego had to wait until the final minute of stoppage time to salvage a point that feels like both too little and plenty, depending on which side you ask.
The match, part of MLS play, opened with San Diego dictating terms. In the 15th minute, Alejandro Alvarado had already rattled the crossbar, and a minute later came the play that lit the fuse: a foul by Jonathan Bond inside the box on Cedric Bakambu. The referee reviewed the play on VAR and, in the 17th minute, confirmed the penalty kick. Anders Dreyer made no mistake from the spot in the 19th minute to make it 1-0. Two minutes later, Bakambu doubled the lead with a low shot from outside the box after a well-worked counterattack set up by Onni Valakari: 2-0, with Snapdragon Stadium dreaming of a rout.
But Houston answered almost immediately. In the 23rd minute, Guilherme pulled one back with a shot from the center of the box after a pass from Lawrence Ennali. The equalizer came in the 32nd minute through Mateusz Bogusz, assisted by Guilherme himself, and four minutes later, in the 36th minute, that same Guilherme completed his brace with a shot from outside the box to make it 2-3. In just 13 minutes, Houston had gone from trailing by two goals to leading the match, and that's how the teams went into the break.
An equalizer that arrived right on time
The second half slowed down a bit in terms of goals, though not in terms of chances: Dagur Thorhallsson struck the post just after the restart, and San Diego kept pushing with chances down the flanks. Houston, with Guilherme always a threat, looked for the fourth goal that would have put the game away. It never came. San Diego brought on attacking reinforcements (Mimbang, Pirani and Ingvartsen all entered together in the 57th minute), and that offensive gamble paid off: in the 85th minute, following a corner kick, Gabriel Pirani finished from close range with his left foot to make it a final 3-3.
San Diego's control of the match was reflected in the game's statistics, even if the scoreline ended up level:
| Stat | San Diego | Houston Dynamo FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 61.4 | 38.6 |
| Shots | 17 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 3 |
| Corners | 10 | 3 |
| Passes | 663 | 426 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 12 |
According to our estimate based on the match's shots, San Diego generated 2.61 expected goals compared to Houston Dynamo FC's 1.26, a gap that confirms the home side was the sharper team with more and better chances, even though the final score ended level thanks to Houston's efficiency in front of goal.
The preview we published ahead of the match gave San Diego a 44% chance of winning, 28% for a draw and 28% for a visiting win, with total expected goals of 2.86. The final result, with six goals scored between both teams, topped that figure, and the draw ended up matching one of the three scenarios we laid out, though not through a tight, low-scoring match but rather through a back-and-forth affair that swung from one extreme to the other for each side.
In the West standings, this result leaves Houston Dynamo FC in fifth place with 46 points from 29 matches played (13 wins, 7 draws, 9 losses), while San Diego sits in 12th place with 33 points from the same number of matches (8 wins, 9 draws, 12 losses). The gap between the two in the standings stands at 13 points, a margin that Saturday's draw doesn't change much for either club.
What the match leaves behind is, above all, an image: San Diego controlled possession, created more chances and even built a two-goal lead, but couldn't hold onto it against a Houston Dynamo FC side that found its star man in Guilherme, who scored two of the visitors' three goals. In the end, a stoppage-time goal kept Houston's comeback from being completed with all three points.
