Sandro Mazzola, eternal Inter Milan legend, dies at 83

The legendary forward spent nearly 20 years at Inter, won two European Cups and the 1968 European Championship with Italy, and the club paid an emotional tribute to one of its greatest symbols.

Italian soccer has lost one of its most beloved symbols. Sandro Mazzola died at 83, and with him goes a piece of Inter Milan's history, the only club he played for throughout his entire career.

To talk about Mazzola is to talk about loyalty. Nearly 20 years wearing the same jersey, something that sounds almost like an urban legend today in a sport where players change clubs every season. Between 1960 and 1977 he played 567 matches for Inter and scored 161 goals, numbers that alone explain why his name was carved into the Nerazzurri club forever.

And those were no ordinary years. Wearing Inter's jersey he won four Scudettos and two European Cups, forming part of one of the most glorious eras in the Milan club's history. But his mark wasn't limited to club soccer: with the Italian national team he also left his stamp, lifting the 1968 European Championship and reaching the final of the 1970 World Cup, where Italy finished runner up. With the Azzurri he tallied 22 goals in 70 matches, a number that confirms he wasn't just a club legend but also a key piece of that generation's national team.

His legacy, moreover, extends beyond the field. Mazzola founded the Italian Footballers' Association in 1968, a gesture that shows just how much he understood soccer as something collective, beyond personal goals and titles.

Inter's tribute

The club expressed its grief with words full of emotion on social media, noting that some players enter history while others become the very history of the institution itself.

"From a young Nerazzurri to an eternal symbol, Sandro Mazzola crossed generations, winning, thrilling, and passing on the love for these colors. He shone on the field, and the star with the mustache still shines. As he used to say, he had one final wish: to be remembered as a good man, one who always gives everything, even when it seems impossible."Inter Milan

After hanging up his boots, Mazzola never strayed far from soccer. He worked as sporting director at both Inter and Torino, and later became a familiar voice behind the microphone as a commentator. In that role he had the privilege of calling two historic moments for Italian soccer: the 1982 and 2006 World Cup finals, both won by the Azzurri.

Few careers sum up so well what it means to be an idol for both club and country. Sandro Mazzola didn't just win titles, he lived them, narrated them, and passed them on, leaving a legacy that Inter itself made sure to honor in its most difficult moment.
