Santa Clara Edges Famalicão With Lone Goal at Estádio de São Miguel
Gonçalo Paciência scored in the 21st minute as Santa Clara stayed unbeaten in fourth place in Liga Portugal.

It took just one shot on target for Santa Clara to walk away with all three points. At the Estádio de São Miguel, the home side won 1-0 over Famalicão despite spending much of the match chasing the ball, and that gap between which team controlled play and what the scoreboard says pretty much sums up the whole game.
The goal came early, in the 21st minute, capping a spell of pressure that Santa Clara had been building from the opening whistle. Ten minutes earlier they had come close with a header from Emanuel Moreira and another effort from Daniel Borges that flew just wide. Just as Famalicão seemed to be settling into the game, Gonçalo Paciência struck, finishing with his right foot from close range, low and inside the left post, off an assist from Sorriso. It was the only goal of the afternoon, but it was enough for Santa Clara to manage the rest of the match with the lead in hand.
Famalicão came out for the second half with more possession and more attacking threat, but couldn't find the finish. Roméo Beney, who came on for Gil Dias at the break, tried his luck several times without troubling the goal, and late on Óscar Aranda tested the home goalkeeper with two shots in quick succession, in the 77th and 79th minutes, both denied by a resilient Santa Clara defense. The home side had its own chances too: Vinícius Lopes and Sorriso combined on a counterattack in the 54th minute, and Brenner forced another save in the second half. None of those attempts found the net, and the 1-0 from the 21st minute held up until the final whistle, through four minutes of stoppage time.
What the numbers say
The stats confirm the match told two different stories: one for the team that had the ball, another for the team that made it count. Famalicão dominated possession and piled up the corners, but Santa Clara was sharper in the final third.
| Stat | Santa Clara | Famalicão |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 32.1 | 67.9 |
| Shots | 12 | 9 |
| Shots on target | 2 | 3 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 1 | 9 |
| Passes | 266 | 569 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 16 |
The corner count, one to nine, tells the story well: Famalicão kept pressing down the flanks and from set pieces, but lacked the precision to turn that pressure into goals. According to our post-match xG estimate based on shot locations, Santa Clara generated 1.755 expected goals to Famalicão's 1.122, a gap that backs up the final result even though the ball spent far more time at the visitors' feet.
What it means for the Liga Portugal table
The win puts Santa Clara in fourth place with 7 points from 3 games played (2 wins and 1 draw, no losses), just two points behind leaders FC Porto. Famalicão, meanwhile, sits in 14th with just 1 point from 3 games (0 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses), a 6-point gap to this afternoon's opponent that reflects a rough start to the season for the visitors.
Santa Clara added another example of not needing the ball to get results, needing just one well-taken chance and a well-organized defense to win a match in which they were clearly the less dominant side in terms of possession. For Famalicão, the challenge remains the same one they've been facing all season: generating plenty of play still isn't translating into points.
