Past the half-hour mark at El Campin, the match stopped mattering. A section of Independiente Santa Fe fans and a group of America de Cali supporters started throwing punches in the stands, and everything spiraled out of control within seconds. What was supposed to be an afternoon of soccer ended with players sprinting to the locker rooms for safety and police struggling to contain the chaos in the terraces.

Referee Moncada had no choice but to temporarily suspend the match, part of matchday six of the Liga BetPlay, while authorities worked to clear fans who had spilled onto the field. After several minutes of stoppage, play resumed, and with the score frozen at a scoreless draw, nothing that happened on the field could overshadow what had unfolded in the stands.

On America's side, David Gonzalez was equally blunt. The coach spoke of an episode that, in his view, stands in stark contrast to the unity the country showed just days earlier.
