Santos Laguna Hosts Tigres Looking to End Five-Game Losing Streak Against Its Personal Tormentor
Paiva urgently needs results to pull away from the bottom of the Apertura 2026 table.
Zero points, five losses and a fan base that's starting to grow impatient. That's the landscape Santos Laguna faces as it hosts Tigres, a rival that in recent years has become something like a personal nightmare for the Guerreros.
The numbers are blunt: of the last 10 meetings between the two teams, Tigres won nine and there was only one draw. Not a single win for Santos in that recent stretch. Given that history, it's hard to say there's ever a good time to snap the streak, since any game against the felines is already an uphill battle.
Renato Paiva's side hasn't managed to pick up a single point so far in the Apertura 2026 and urgently needs results to start pulling away from the bottom of the table. There's one detail worth noting: even though Santos sits at zero points, its goal difference of -7 is better than that of Bravos, the outright cellar dwellers at -12. It's no consolation, but it at least shows the team's output on both ends of the field hasn't been quite as disastrous as that of the last-place club.
A Tigres Side That Isn't Shining Either, But Knows How to Beat Santos
Tigres isn't enjoying its best campaign, but comes in as the favorite precisely because of that recent history. The team led in goal by Nahuel Guzman, with Juan Brunetta running the show in midfield, has enough quality to make life difficult for a Santos side that needs to reinvent itself fast.
For this match, Paiva could go with a lineup featuring Carlos Acevedo in goal, a back line of Mauricio Cuevas, Franco Pardo, Jonathan Perez and Kevin Picon, and up top the duo of Kevin Palacios and Eduardo Aguirre looking to trouble a Tigres backline that would be led by Alan Franco alongside Francisco Reyes.
On the Tigres side, Rodrigo Aguirre is expected to carry the offensive load alongside Diego Sanchez and Diego Lainez out wide, while in midfield Fernando Gorriaran and Romulo Zwarg would be tasked with holding the tactical shape.
The match is set for Saturday, August 29 at Estadio Corona, kicking off at 9:10 pm Mexico City time (10:10 pm in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru; 11:10 pm on the US East Coast and in Chile; 12:10 am in Argentina and Uruguay). The broadcast will be available through Canal 5, TUDN and ViX in Mexican territory.
For Santos, the challenge is twofold: end the winless run and do it against the very team that has given it the most trouble in recent memory. For Tigres, it's a chance to keep picking up points on the road and keep alive a streak that's already starting to weigh on the recent history of this matchup.
