Own goal and penalty give Sarmiento road win over Estudiantes Río Cuarto in Argentina's Primera División

It took Sarmiento just five minutes to put the game almost out of reach, and the visitors didn't even have to work for it: an own goal from Gonzalo Maffini put them ahead at the Estadio Ciudad de Río Cuarto Antonio Candini. Estudiantes Río Cuarto spent the rest of the afternoon pushing forward, stringing passes together and pressing into the opposition box, but ultimately fell 0-2 in Argentina's Primera División, with a second goal, a penalty converted by Junior Marabel in the 70th minute, putting the result beyond doubt.

The home side controlled the ball (65.4% possession) and racked up corner after corner, fourteen to the visitors' one, but couldn't find the finishing touch. Early on, even before Maffini's misfortune, Sarmiento had already given a warning with shots from Mauricio Martínez and Cristian Zabala, and the visitors made the most of one of their few threatening moves to take the lead almost without trying. In the 68th minute, Lucas Bruera fouled Julián Mavilla inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Two minutes later, Junior Marabel struck the penalty with his right foot toward the right side of the goal to make it a final 0-2. The home side still tried to respond with substitutions, sending on Bajamich, Lo Celso and Garnerone, and had late chances through Alejandro Cabrera and Martín Garnerone, but couldn't find a way back into the game.

The numbers back up the story: Estudiantes Río Cuarto had more shots and more passes, but Sarmiento was sharper where it counts, on target (4 to 3) and, above all, on the scoreboard. Our expected goals estimate based on the match's shots gives Sarmiento 1.553 and the home side 1.073, a gap that, while not enormous, backs up the visitors' win even though territorial control clearly belonged to the home team.

The result also runs against much of what we projected beforehand: we had given Sarmiento a 40% chance of winning, against 23% for the home side and 37% for a draw, with expected goals of 0.98 for the visitors and 0.69 for Estudiantes Río Cuarto. A visiting win was within expectations, but the 0-2 scoreline ended up more emphatic than those numbers suggested, especially considering the home side finished with more possession and more shots.
