Sarrafiore Rescues Atlante With Stoppage-Time Equalizer in 1-1 Draw With Leon
Martin Sarrafiore scores in the 90th minute to snatch a point at the death after Leon had gone ahead on a penalty.

There was just a minute left on the clock and Estadio Banorte seemed resigned to a 1-0 loss to Leon. Then Martin Sarrafiore stepped up to fire a shot into the top left corner, sealing a final 1-1 between Atlante and Leon in Liga MX. At that point in the match, the point felt like a letdown for Leon and a lifeline for Atlante.
The result leaves a different taste than the pregame numbers suggested. Our projection for this match gave Atlante a 36% chance of winning, a 30% chance of a draw, and a 34% chance of a Leon victory, with 2.53 combined expected goals. The draw is indeed how it ended, but it came by a very different path than a quiet, uneventful match: fans had to wait until stoppage time to see it confirmed.
A scoreless first half and a second half decided late
The opening 45 minutes went back and forth without payoff. Martin Sarrafiore gave an early warning in the 7th minute with a shot that hit the left post, then struck the woodwork again in the 18th. Luis Puente also tried his luck with a header and a right-footed shot from outside the box, while on the other side Diber Cambindo had more than one chance without finding the net. The first half ended 0-0, with Atlante slightly sharper but unable to turn that into a goal.
The match stayed locked up in the second half until the 76th minute, when VAR reviewed a handball by Martin Sarrafiore inside the box and awarded a penalty to Leon. Four minutes later, in the 80th, Alfonso Alvarado made no mistake from the spot, converting to make it 0-1 with a shot to the right side of the goal. With that result, the match appeared settled, but Atlante refused to give in: deep into stoppage time, in the 90th minute, Martin Sarrafiore struck again, this time finishing off an assist from Jairon Charcopa with a left-footed shot into the top corner to level the score.
The match by the numbers
Leon had a bit more possession and generated more danger in terms of xG, though the overall stats show a fairly even match, with Atlante firing off more shots but with less precision.
| Stat | Atlante | Leon |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 47.8 | 52.2 |
| Shots | 17 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 5 |
| Corners | 3 | 3 |
| Passes | 422 | 476 |
| Fouls committed | 19 | 10 |
The xG generated in the match, calculated after the fact based on shot location, favors Leon with 1.389 compared to Atlante's 0.952. That half-goal gap in the quality of chances partly explains why Leon was able to go ahead, even though the final score ended up more balanced than those numbers suggested.
What the result means in the standings
Leon came into this match with 10 points in the tournament, the product of three wins, one draw and two losses in six matches played, and now shares that total with several teams in the middle of the table. Atlante, for its part, has 6 points after one win, three draws and two losses in its six matches, with a goal difference of -2. The two sides are separated by 4 points in the overall standings.
In the end, neither side could claim all three points. Leon watched the lead it had earned from the penalty spot slip away in the final seconds, while Atlante found in Martin Sarrafiore, author of a personal brace on the night, the man who rescued a draw that, given how the 90 minutes played out, came close to being a defeat.
