Schalke Stuns Winless Union Berlin 3-1 on the Road

Union Berlin controlled the ball, fired off twenty one shots, and finished the way it started: without a win. Schalke 04 walked away from the Stadion An der Alten Försterei with a 1-3 victory, striking twice in the first half to put the game out of reach before the break, then holding on through a dramatic finish that stretched into twelve minutes of stoppage time.

The opener came in the 24th minute: Robin Gosens curled a left footed strike from the left side that found the far corner of the home goal. Union Berlin had barely had a sniff before that, with an early attempt from Leopold Querfeld in the first minute and a header from Felix Uduokhai in the 14th, but Schalke was sharper in front of goal, with Adil Aouchiche and Kenan Karaman already testing Frederik Rønnow before the breakthrough.

The killer blow arrived right on the stroke of halftime. A Second Half of Dominance Without Reward

Union Berlin pushed hard after the restart. Tom Rothe headed one off the crossbar in the 54th minute, Woo-yeong Jeong, András Schäfer and Michel Aebischer all had shots that missed the target, and Marin Ljubicic even struck the right post in the 86th minute. Schalke, with Loris Karius alert between the posts, held firm and also created chances of its own: Soufiane El-Faouzi tested the keeper repeatedly from outside the box, and Junior Adamu forced a save as well.

The home side's reward finally came in stoppage time, with the match nearly out of gas. In the 95th minute, Tim Skarke converted a headed pass from Tom Rothe with a close range right footed finish to make it 1-2. There was no time for more: Union Berlin pushed for an equalizer with another shot from Skarke and a header from Rothe in the 99th minute, but the score held.
