Sebastián Viera takes over as Junior's coach: from the goal to the bench after 13 years

Thirteen years between the posts leave a mark. And now that mark is moving to the bench. Sebastián Viera is back at Junior de Barranquilla, but this time not with gloves on, instead carrying the responsibility of leading the club that turned him into one of the most beloved goalkeepers in its recent history.

The Uruguayan sat down for his first press conference as head coach with the calm of someone who isn't walking into unfamiliar territory. Quite the opposite: he's coming home, just with a different job to do. That's how he summed it up as soon as he started speaking.

Asked about how long his deal as coach might last, the Uruguayan didn't dance around it. For him, job security has nothing to do with what's written on a piece of paper at the start, it's about what you prove on the field week after week.

I know what Junior is, I know what it demands and what needs to be done, and if you don't do it, I know what happens. Long contracts, those you earn. I came here for one year and I ended up staying many, many years.Sebastián Viera

That same reasoning is what kept him from overthinking it when the offer to take the coaching job came in. He knows the club, he knows the city, and according to him, that weighed heavily on his decision.

If Junior gives you an opportunity, you have to take it. Ever since I left I've been waiting to come back. I know the club inside and out, and every corner of the city. I hope I can win the players over and get the best out of this for the club.Sebastián Viera

That familiarity with the surroundings has a second layer, maybe the most practical one for day-to-day life in the locker room: several of the current players were his teammates not that long ago. Reuniting with them, now in a different role, came with its own emotional weight.

A dynamic team that plays with pressure

As for the style he wants to bring to the team, Viera spoke of vertical soccer, high pressure and a compact block that lets Junior win the ball back close to the opponent's goal. The idea, he said, is to get that onto the field and squeeze the most out of the squad he has available.

Before thinking about styles or long-term results, the new coach set one clear priority: getting back what the team has lost along the way. And for him, that starts with reconnecting with a fan base that has very specific expectations about how Junior should play.
