Seedorf takes over at Corinthians to pull club out of relegation zone
The Dutchman signed through the end of next year after Fernando Diniz's dismissal, facing the challenge of lasting more than six months in a dugout, something he has never managed.

Corinthians is going all in, rolling the dice on a name that sounds like European soccer royalty but still has plenty to prove on the sideline. The Brazilian club announced Sunday the hiring of Clarence Seedorf as its new head coach, his first job running a team since 2019.
The Dutchman signed a contract through the end of next year, as Corinthians confirmed on its own social media. He is not walking into an easy situation: the team sits 16th in the 20 team table of the Brazilian championship, just one spot above the relegation zone. Rarely does such a splashy arrival line up with such an urgent moment.
Seedorf steps in for Fernando Diniz, who was let go on Wednesday after a run of seven straight losses in the tournament with a squad that includes Dutch forward Memphis Depay. A slump like that, in any league, tends to cost a coach his job, and Corinthians was no exception.
What stands out is the contrast between his resume as a player and as a coach. As a footballer, Seedorf was one of the most decisive midfielders of his generation: he remains the only player to win the European Cup or Champions League with three different clubs. He lifted the trophy with Ajax in 1995, at just 19 years old, did it again with Real Madrid in 1998, and celebrated twice more with Milan, in 2003 and 2007. His playing career, in fact, wrapped up in Brazil, wearing the Botafogo jersey.
A short track record on the sideline
As a coach, it is a different story. Seedorf managed Milan in 2014, one of three clubs he has led, and none of those three stints lasted longer than six months. The most recent came in 2018, at Deportivo La Coruna. After that, his last dugout experience was with the Cameroon national team, more than seven years ago.
Now he arrives at a Corinthians side that needs results immediately, not long term projects, though the contract running through the end of next year suggests the club is thinking about continuity if things turn around. The question hanging in the air is unavoidable: can a player of such towering stature translate that pedigree into concrete results in a fight to avoid relegation?
The challenge is twofold: on one hand, pulling the team out of the bottom of the table, and on the other, proving he can last more than half a year in a dugout, something he has not managed so far. With Depay as the biggest name up front, Corinthians needs its new coach to quickly find a formula that has been missing for weeks.
