Shore's 98th-minute strike rescues 2-2 draw for New York City FC against Orlando City
Orlando City dominated with two separate comebacks, but New York City FC, sharper in its chances, equalized in stoppage time on a Jonathan Shore goal in MLS.

There were barely two minutes left in a lengthy stoppage-time period when Jonathan Shore popped up to make it a final 2-2 between Orlando City SC and New York City FC at Inter&Co Stadium. The home side had the match won with a one-goal lead in the second half, but the visitors pulled it back at the death, in the 98th minute, in an MLS clash that swung back and forth on the scoreboard in both halves.
The script got going early. In the 17th minute, Alonso Martínez put New York City FC ahead with a left-footed finish from close range, set up by a pass from Hannes Wolf. Orlando didn't take long to answer: in the 31st minute, Antoine Griezmann connected on a header into the top left corner, off a cross from Martín Ojeda, making it 1-1 at the break.
The home side came out with a different energy after the locker room and needed just three minutes to take the lead: Martín Ojeda, assisted by Vinícius Nogueira, finished with his left foot from inside the box to make it 2-1 in the 48th minute. That scoreline held for much of the second half, with a penalty in between that could have made things even more complicated for the home side: Wilder Cartagena was sent off, well, booked, for fouling Talles Magno inside the box, but Talles sent his 80th-minute shot just wide and the score stayed put.
New York City FC kept pushing until the end, with attacking substitutions like the introduction of Bénie Traoré and Malachi Jones, and that persistence paid off deep into stoppage time: Jonathan Shore, assisted by James Sands, slotted a low finish by the near post for the 2-2 that closed the books in the 98th minute.
What the numbers say
Territorial control belonged to the visitors, who held more of the ball and created more clear chances over the 90 minutes:
| Stat | Orlando City SC | New York City FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 44.2 | 55.8 |
| Shots | 10 | 17 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 7 |
| Big chances | 1 | 5 |
| Corners | 3 | 9 |
| Passes | 397 | 490 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 12 |
That edge also shows up in the estimated xG based on the match's shots: our post-match calculation gives New York City FC 3.92 expected goals against Orlando City SC's 0.94. That's a wide gap that lines up with what the chance count showed, though the home side did a better job converting its chances for much of the game.
The preview had pointed to an even matchup: 42% odds for an Orlando City SC win, 25% for a draw and 33% for New York City FC, with combined expected goals of 3.36. The final result, a four-goal draw, ended up matching that draw scenario our model hadn't ruled out, though the path to get there, with the home side ahead twice and the visitors' rescue act in stoppage time, was far more dramatic than any percentage could have predicted.
The Eastern Conference table
In the Eastern Conference standings, Orlando City SC sits in seventh place following this result with 42 points from 31 games played (12 wins, 6 draws and 13 losses), while New York City FC is in 12th place with 35 points from the same number of games (8 wins, 11 draws and 12 losses). The gap between the two sides in the table is 7 points, a distance this draw doesn't change in any meaningful way for either club.
The match leaves a shared feeling: Orlando City SC had the game in hand with two separate leads and couldn't hold on, while New York City FC, despite controlling possession and creating more chances over the 90 minutes, needed stoppage time to grab a point that the run of play, according to the numbers, wasn't denying it.
