Sporting Cristal hosts Sport Huancayo looking for a win to stay on the heels of Alianza Lima and Garcilaso
The Rimac club plays Sunday at the Alberto Gallardo and needs a win to stay in the Clausura title race.
Win and wait. That's the formula on Sporting Cristal's mind this weekend, though in soccer things are never as simple as they sound. The Rimac club hosts Sport Huancayo this Sunday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m. (Peru time) at Estadio Alberto Gallardo, in matchday 5 of the Clausura in the 2026 Liga 1 season, in one of the weekend's most eye catching matchups. The broadcast will air on L1 Max. Why does this game matter so much for Cristal? Because Roberto Mosquera's side is right in the thick of the title race and wants to leapfrog Alianza Lima and Deportivo Garcilaso into first place. To do that, they first have to take care of business at home: grab all three points against Huancayo, then check the standings to see what the teams above them do.
The names who could decide it
Yoshimar Yotun remains the heartbeat of the team. The captain controls the pace of the match, deciding when to push the tempo and when to slow things down, and Cristal tends to play at whatever rhythm he sets from midfield. Another player raising his level is Piero Magallanes. Since landing on the national team's radar, the winger has become a more complete player: power, speed to beat defenders on the flanks, and a mid range shot that has already brought the team plenty of joy.
How both teams arrive
Cristal is coming off a 1-1 draw rescued against Universitario at Estadio Monumental, a result that felt almost like a win in the locker room given how tough that venue usually is. The Cristal goal came from Yotun, from the penalty spot, with his trademark composure. Sport Huancayo, for its part, also salvaged a point on the road at the IPD in Huancayo, where it drew 1-1 with Chankas. The goal for the Huancayo side came off the boot of Ronal Huaccha.
Recent history between the two sides favors the visitors: the last time they met was on February 28, in the Apertura, and Sport Huancayo came away with a 2-1 win on its home turf. The home goals were scored by Salcedo and Caballero, while Jair Moretti pulled one back for Cristal. That's the result Cristal is looking to erase now, with the advantage of playing at the Alberto Gallardo and the obligation to not slip up if they want to keep dreaming about first place in the Clausura.
