Tagliafico reveals he played the 2026 World Cup final with both quads cramping
Argentina's fullback opened up about how he experienced the loss to Spain and admitted he even considered leaving the national team.

He played with both quads cramping, did what he could to contain Lamine Yamal, and still ended up in tears after the loss in the 2026 World Cup final. By his own account, Nicolas Tagliafico was among the few Argentines who left a creditable impression against Spain. The curious part is that he himself believes playing through pain, far from holding him back, actually helped him dig deeper into the match.
"I think playing hurt actually helped me. I felt like I had to do it for the team. I wasn't at 100 percent," said the fullback. He added a detail that captures what it's like to play a final at your physical limit: "I had cramps, but I had to keep going. With the adrenaline I felt like I could push a little more, even though I felt both quads cramping."
Beyond his own performance, Tagliafico didn't shy away from breaking down the team's collective showing. For the defender, the gap with Spain came down mainly to tactics. "The feeling from the final was pretty poor compared to what we showed in the other matches, even compared to the 2022 final. Unfortunately, tactically they ran right over us," he admitted.
So what exactly happened in that final? According to the player himself, the accumulated wear and tear caught up with the team at the worst possible moment. "The fatigue, mental and physical, weighed on us. When they took control of the game away from us it hurt, because that's not our strength, we like to play with the ball," he admitted. He was even more direct about the opponent: "Spain played a lot better than us and we never found the calm to keep possession. The times we tried, it didn't work out."
With the match slipping away and the injuries piling up, Tagliafico admitted the team's thoughts had already started drifting toward penalty kicks. "There comes a point where you're thinking: 'Let's get this to penalties, let's see if we can pull it off.' Still, we held out hope until the last minute that we could turn it around," he recalled.
Despite the blow, the Lyon defender took a positive view of having reached another final. "I'm left with the feeling that reaching another final is something incredible. The World Cup is brutal, there are always moments that can knock you out," he said.
The semifinal against England, much more than soccer
In his conversation with Juan Pablo Varsky, Tagliafico also lingered on what was, for him, the most intense match of the entire tournament: the semifinal against England. "Against England it wasn't just a soccer match," he said. "We felt like we were playing for something bigger than just reaching the final. It was an incredibly emotional match. You couldn't even hear the anthems, you'd hug a teammate and feel everything shaking with emotion."
With Enzo's goal I already felt like we had won it. That feeling is unmatched. It wasn't just a soccer match, it was so much more.Nicolas Tagliafico
Is an era coming to an end?
The physical toll of the whole tournament also left him with a more personal reflection. Tagliafico revealed that after the final he even considered stepping away. "The thought of leaving the national team crossed my mind. The opponents keep getting faster, more athletic. Since I didn't arrive at the final in good physical shape, even though I played well, I got to thinking maybe that was my last match," he confessed.
Without closing the door entirely, he left an open question about his future in the Argentina shirt: "What I do believe is that it might be my last World Cup, but I'd rather take it day by day and see what happens."
