Tigres beat Atlante 2-0 with extra man and a missed penalty from the visitors
The home side made the most of Calzadilla's 35th-minute red card to win at Estadio Universitario, while Atlante wasted a penalty in the 70th minute.

Tigres UANL beat Atlante 2-0 at Estadio Universitario in a Liga MX clash that was decided in the final fifteen minutes, after the home side made the most of a numerical advantage it had held since the first half. Rodrigo Aguirre and Juan Brunetta scored the goals that secured the win for Tigres against an Atlante side that played with a man down for nearly the entire second half and also missed a penalty that could have changed the story.
A man down and a wasted penalty
The match turned against the visitors in the 35th minute, when Luis Calzadilla picked up a second yellow card for dangerous play and left Atlante with ten men for nearly the rest of the game. Despite being a man short, the visiting side held firm and reached the break level at 0-0, after a first half in which Tigres produced more of the play but couldn't turn it into goals, with shots from Diego Lainez and Vladimir Loroña failing to find the target.
In the second half, Atlante had the clearest chance of the match in the 70th minute, when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by Rafael Guerrero on Armando Escobar inside the box. However, Luis Puente's spot kick was saved by the home goalkeeper, a miss that ended up weighing heavily on the final result.
Tigres capitalized on its numerical edge late on. In the 78th minute, Rodrigo Aguirre struck with his left foot from inside the box after an assist from Juan Brunetta to make it 1-0. And as the match wound down, in the 89th minute, Brunetta himself sealed the win with a low shot from the center of the box, assisted by Isac Galván, to make it a final 2-0.
The numbers behind the dominance
The stats confirm the control the home side exerted over the 90 minutes, helped by its numerical advantage in the second half. Tigres had almost double the possession and more than triple the corners of its rival.
| Stat | Tigres | Atlante |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 66.8 | 33.2 |
| Shots | 18 | 11 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 4 |
| Corners | 5 | 1 |
| Passes | 611 | 298 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 16 |
As for chance creation, the xG estimated after the fact shows a striking figure: 1.28 for Tigres against 1.587 for Atlante, suggesting the visiting side created chances of similar or even higher quality despite playing most of the match with a man down and finishing without a goal.
A surprise compared to the projections
The result runs counter to what had been expected before kickoff. The preview had Atlante as the favorite, with a 48% chance of winning compared to 27% for Tigres and 25% for a draw, along with an expected-goals projection of 1.88 for the visitors against 1.38 for the home side. However, Calzadilla's early red card completely changed the flow of the game and ended up tipping the balance in favor of Tigres, who came out on top on the scoreboard despite not being clearly superior in chance creation according to the match's xG.
What the result leaves behind
For Tigres, the win is a relief in a difficult season: with this result the club reaches 4 points in its league record, with just 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses in 5 matches played. Atlante, meanwhile, stays on 5 points, the product of 1 win, 2 draws and 2 losses in the same number of matches, and will rue both the red card and the missed penalty as the two factors that kept it from picking up points at Estadio Universitario. The gap between the two sides in the standings is just 1 point, which gives this result added weight in the fight to climb the table.
