Toluca squanders dominant performance as Tijuana salvages 2-2 at the Nemesio Díez
Despite 32 shots and 17 corners, Toluca couldn't put away a Tijuana side that erased a 0-2 deficit thanks to a brace from Yael Padilla and a goal from Elias Manoel.

Toluca dominated, fired off 32 shots and racked up 17 corners at the Nemesio Díez, but ran into a Club Tijuana side that never stopped fighting. The final score was 2-2, a result that leaves the home side feeling it let slip more than just two points in Liga MX.
The match kicked off with Toluca camped in the opposing half from the first minute, probing with crosses and relentless work down the flanks, but it was Tijuana who struck first. In the 37th minute, on a counterattack, Yael Padilla set up Elias Manoel, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 0-1. That's how the teams went into the break, a scoreline that ran counter to everything the home side's dominance in the opening 45 minutes had suggested.
In the second half, Toluca began to find reward for its pressure. In the 60th minute, Federico Viñas, who had come on at halftime, equalized with a left-footed strike from the center of the box, assisted by Helinho. Barely four minutes later, Helinho himself turned from provider to scorer, putting Toluca up 2-1 in the 64th minute with a low finish by the left post after a counterattack started by Nicolás Castro. The Nemesio Díez was already dreaming of a complete turnaround.
But Tijuana didn't fold. Ten minutes after the home side's second goal, in the 74th minute, Yael Padilla struck again to make it 2-2 for good: a right-footed shot that found the top corner off a corner kick. There were no more goals despite a lengthy second-half stoppage time of nine minutes, during which both Brian García and Federico Viñas had chances for Toluca but couldn't find the breakthrough.
Dominance that wasn't enough
The numbers back up what was obvious on the field: Toluca controlled the ball almost completely and generated far more attacking volume, but couldn't turn that into a win.
| Stat | Toluca | Club Tijuana |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 75.9 | 24.1 |
| Shots | 32 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 4 |
| Big chances | 2 | 3 |
| Corners | 17 | 5 |
| Passes | 550 | 178 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 9 |
Based on our xG estimate calculated from the shots taken in the match, Toluca generated 2.37 expected goals to Tijuana's 2.04, a far tighter margin than the 32-to-12 shot count would suggest. Tijuana created fewer chances but made them count, something reflected in the visitors' three big chances compared to just two for the home side.
The result runs against our pre-match projection: our model gave Toluca a 64% chance of victory, with just 14% for Tijuana and 22% for a draw, and expected goals of 2.14 to 0.94. Reality ended up far closer than forecast, with Tijuana overturning a two-goal deficit to leave Toluca's home ground with a point.
What the draw means
With this result, Toluca sits on 22 points so far this tournament, in fourth place, while Tijuana has 17 points and sits tenth, with a five-point gap between the two sides in the standings. For the team coached by Sebastián Abreu, salvaging a draw after trailing 0-2 carries real value, especially coming on a field where the opponent barely let them breathe with the ball. For Toluca, though, it's a missed opportunity: generating that much and walking away with just one point is a bill that, sooner or later, comes due in the standings.
