Toronto FC strikes on the counter, stuns dominant Red Bulls 2-0

An early own goal and a Sallói counterattack hand Toronto FC the win even though New York Red Bulls controlled possession and shots at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Toronto FC strikes on the counter, stuns dominant Red Bulls 2-0

Barely two minutes had gone by when Justin Che turned the ball into his own net, gifting Toronto FC a lead it never gave back. The match finished 0-2 at Sports Illustrated Stadium, and the strange part is that New York Red Bulls did almost everything needed to win, except actually win.

The own goal set the tone early. From there, Red Bulls piled up territory and chances: shots from Cameron Harper, Justin Che, Julian Hall and Cade Cowell, corner after corner, but the ball just would not go in. Toronto, meanwhile, dropped back, surrendered the ball almost entirely and waited for its moment. That moment came in the 81st minute, with the game heading into its final stretch: a well executed counterattack ended with a pass from Jonathan Osorio that let Dániel Sallói finish with his right foot from the center of the box, sealing the 0-2.

Dominance without reward

The numbers tell the story of a match that was lopsided in control but not in the result. The home side dominated possession and piled up shots; the visitors, with far less of the ball, were more clinical when it mattered.

That dominance also shows up in our own expected goals estimate: Red Bulls generated an xG of 1.121 compared to Toronto's 0.634, calculated from shot locations across the full match. In other words, the home side created more and better chances, but it lacked the finishing touch, or the visitors had more than enough of it, right where it counted: on the two plays that decided the scoreline.

Red Bulls threw everything at it in the second half. Michael Bradley shuffled his bench, bringing on Emil Forsberg and Eric Choupo-Moting right at the start of the second half, then added Jorge Ruvalcaba, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty and Pedro Castro in search of answers. There were crosses, headers like Choupo-Moting's in the 69th minute that sailed well over the bar, and shots like Julian Hall's that never found a way through. Robin Fraser, on the other side, was more cautious with his substitutions and let his team defend with discipline until the final blow.

What the preview said versus what happened on the field

Before kickoff, our projection gave New York Red Bulls a 45% chance of winning, 26% for a draw and 29% for Toronto FC, with expected goals split 1.70 for the home side and 1.33 for the visitors. The result was the exact opposite of what the model considered most likely: the team with the longer odds on paper won, and did it without needing to control the game.

In the MLS Eastern Conference standings, this result leaves both clubs in a tightly bunched spot: New York Red Bulls came into the match in eighth place with 36 points from 30 games (10 wins, 6 draws, 14 losses), while Toronto FC sat tenth with the same 36 points, also from 30 games (8 wins, 12 draws, 10 losses). The gap between the two before this match was zero points, and the road win lets Toronto grab three crucial points in that midtable battle.

In the end, the match offers a clear takeaway: having the ball and creating more chances does not always add up to a win. Red Bulls ran into an opponent that cashed in on an early gift and a sharp counterattack to walk away with all three points from Sports Illustrated Stadium, leaving the home fans with the feeling that the scoreline did not reflect what happened on the field.
