Montevideo City Torque and Peñarol Face Off at the Centenario With the Clausura Title on the Line
The match postponed back in August finally goes ahead this Wednesday, and it could send Peñarol to the top of the table or confirm Torque as the season's leading title contender.

Some matches get played when they're supposed to, and others arrive late but carrying more weight than they ever had on paper. This falls into the second category: Montevideo City Torque and Peñarol meet this Wednesday, September 30 at Estadio Centenario, in a match that was actually supposed to open the Clausura Tournament back in August before it was postponed. Almost two months later, it finally gets played, and now it carries an added stake: it could completely reshape the title race.
Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM Argentina, Chile and Uruguay time (6:00 PM in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador), and the match will stream live on Disney+'s Premium Plan, exclusive to South America.
A Clash That Could Decide the Clausura
When it was postponed, this matchup didn't carry the significance it does today. Things have changed: Montevideo City Torque established itself as one of the tournament's strongest sides, while Peñarol, despite its ups and downs, climbed to the top of the Annual Table. Now Wednesday's result could reshuffle everything. If Peñarol wins, it draws level with the Ciudadanos at the top of the Clausura. If Montevideo City Torque wins, it stands as the clearest favorite to walk away with the title.
There's no need to overstate it to grasp the stakes: rarely does a rescheduled match end up carrying as much weight as the one that was supposed to be played on its original date.
Key Names on Each Side
For Montevideo City Torque, the danger comes from up top: Salomón Rodríguez and Esteban Obregón are tasked with creating havoc in attack, while Franco Pizzichillo has become essential in midfield, giving the team its balance.
Peñarol, meanwhile, is once again leaning on the goals of Matías Arezo, with Leonel Jaime and Leandro Umpiérrez tasked with building the play behind the forward.
Current Form Heading Into the Centenario
The Ciudadanos arrive with the first blemish on their Clausura record: they fell 2-0 to Deportivo Maldonado, though that didn't cost them the lead, which they still hold with 18 points. Peñarol, on the other hand, had to sweat until the final whistle: they beat Boston River 2-1 in a result that came together late, and that win left them third in the table with 15 points.
The most recent meeting between the two sides also went in favor of the Aurinegros: they faced off on August 26 in the group stage of the Copa AUF Uruguay, and Peñarol won 1-0 on a goal from Eric Remedi.
With that history on the table, the Centenario is set to host a match that's arriving late on the calendar but right on time to decide much of what's left of the season.
