Racing and Peñarol kept waiting at the Centenario because there was no ambulance at the stadium
Referee Esteban Ostojich held up kickoff and, with the approval of captains Trindade and Cotugno, decided to get the match underway anyway after an 8 minute wait.

Sometimes the real protagonist of a match never touches the ball. That's exactly what happened at the Estadio Centenario, where Racing and Peñarol were getting ready to face off in matchday nine of the 2026 Clausura Tournament and ended up at the center of a scene that had nothing to do with tactics.
The match was scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m., and up to that point everything was going according to plan. The players from La Escuelita and the Carbonero took the field on time, flanked by the officials, ready to get started. But just before the opening whistle, referee Esteban Ostojich noticed something that was far from minor: the ambulance still hadn't arrived at the stadium.
Under protocol, no match can begin without a medical vehicle present near the field, so Ostojich didn't hesitate to halt everything before play could start. The first thing he did was call over the captains of both teams, Jesús Trindade for Racing and Guillermo Cotugno for Peñarol, to explain the situation and let them weigh in on how to proceed.
Wait it out or start anyway? That was the dilemma put to the captains. And the first call was the cautious one: hold off until the ambulance showed up, just in case something happened during the match without the proper medical coverage in place.
Eight minutes went by with the players already out on the field, the atmosphere building without the ball ever rolling. That's when Trindade and Cotugno changed their minds and gave the referee the green light to get the match going, even though the medical vehicle still hadn't shown up.
With both captains on board, Ostojich decided to start the match as things stood. Play proceeded normally from there until, in the 5th minute, the ambulance finally pulled into the Estadio Centenario, closing the book on the episode that had caused the initial delay.
An organizational hiccup that, fortunately, didn't escalate into anything bigger and ended up as just another footnote in matchday nine of the Clausura, though it did show how even logistical details can throw off the schedule of such a highly anticipated clash.
