Tyler Adams Named New Captain of the US Men's National Team

Some appointments come with a cold press release. Others feel like the closing of a chapter. This one belongs to the second category. Tyler Adams is, as of this Friday, the new captain of the United States men's national team, as confirmed by head coach Mauricio Pochettino at a press conference in Tempe, Arizona, ahead of Saturday's friendly against Mexico.

The Bournemouth midfielder takes over the armband left by Tim Ream, the team's captain at the World Cup, who announced his retirement from the national team before Tuesday's 4-2 win over Chile. The handoff could hardly be more symbolic: from a veteran closing out his international career to a player who already knows what it means to wear the armband on the sport's biggest stage.

Because this isn't new territory for Adams. At 27, he had already served as captain of the US side at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a tournament in which, besides leading the team into the round of 16, he handled with notable composure a round of questions from Iranian media ahead of the group stage clash that the US won 1-0.

Pochettino didn't hide his enthusiasm for the decision. "I think we're very happy to announce, and for everyone to know, that he's going to be our leader and our captain," he said of Adams. The coach explained that his relationship with the player goes back two years, and that history factored heavily into the choice.

"I think we've had a really good relationship over the last two years. We've talked a lot, and I think he knows what I expect, and he's a perfect role model for everyone in terms of character, philosophy, the future, representing this incredible country. I think he's the player and the person who can lead us through this period ahead."Mauricio Pochettino

Adams himself responded with the emotion of someone who understands what the role entails. "I'm extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity," he said, adding that the goal is "to help my teammates and the coaching staff in any way I can to win, to grow the federation, and ultimately take that next step."

A Decision Talked Through, Not Improvised

Pochettino made clear that the choice of captain was his own, made together with his coaching staff, and that he informed the players on Thursday as well as the federation's board. Asked whether Adams would remain captain through the 2030 World Cup, the coach joked that he would, "if he behaves." Then, turning serious, he confirmed the midfielder would hold the role going forward.

What stands out is that Adams has no intention of changing who he is just because he's wearing the armband. He says he has grown, both on and off the field, since that World Cup, and that he learned by watching captains like Ream himself. But he isn't planning to reinvent himself.

"I don't think wearing the armband means anything in terms of being a leader or being different from who I am. I'm going to be exactly the same person. I'm going to try to lead this group toward a winning culture and keep building what we're trying to build here."Tyler Adams

On Saturday's match, Pochettino said the lineup will continue to balance experience with youth, managing the squad's physical load during this window. He also said he's eager to see how the younger players respond to what's expected to be a packed stadium, with a majority of Mexican fans in attendance.

Unlike the last cycle, when the United States qualified automatically as hosts, this time the team will have to go through World Cup qualifying. That's why, for Pochettino, playing in a hostile environment like the one expected is, in itself, a form of training. "I welcome this kind of match, playing in a tough atmosphere, and I think that will definitely help for the future," the coach said in closing.
