Scanlon's wondergoal spoils Malta's party as Gibraltar snatch a precious point

Malta dominated clearly and went ahead through Mbong, but a stunning strike from James Scanlon earned Gibraltar a draw that leaves the Group D1 leaders feeling they let points slip away.

Scanlon's wondergoal spoils Malta's party as Gibraltar snatch a precious point

Malta went ahead, dominated for most of the match and still had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Gibraltar at Ta' Qali National Stadium. James Scanlon's goal in the 60th minute ruined the home side's afternoon after they had done virtually everything right, leaving them to rue points dropped in the UEFA Nations League.

The first half was a one-way street with no reward at the end of it: Malta came forward time and again, with Ryan Camenzuli, Joseph Mbong and Teddy Teuma testing Gibraltar's goalkeeper from every angle, but it stayed 0-0 at the break. It wasn't until the start of the second half that Malta finally broke through. In the 52nd minute, following a corner kick, Ilyas Chouaref whipped in a cross that Joseph Mbong tucked home from close range with his right foot to make it 1-0. It looked like the natural reward for the home side's persistence.

But Gibraltar, who had barely threatened the opposing goal, had a punch of their own in reserve. Eight minutes after the opener, in the 60th minute, James Scanlon unleashed a right-footed strike from outside the box that flew into the top left corner: a wonderful goal that leveled the score and silenced the stadium. It was by far the most spectacular moment of the match, and it ended up deciding the final result.

After the equalizer, Malta regained control and created several more chances: Camenzuli, Irvin Cardona and, late on, substitutes Keyon Ewurum and Paul Mbong all had clear opportunities to tip the balance. Ewurum even rattled the right post with a shot in the 88th minute, in one of the last and clearest chances of the afternoon. Gibraltar, for their part, defended with discipline and looked to counter, without seriously troubling the Maltese goal again.

The numbers confirm the dominance

The statistics back up what was seen on the field: Malta was comfortably superior in terms of volume of play, even if it didn't translate into more goals.

The estimated xG calculated after the fact, based on shot locations, also reflects that imbalance: Malta generated 2.431 expected goals compared to just 0.454 for Gibraltar. Those numbers point to a much greater offensive output from the home side, which still couldn't close out the match despite the sheer number of chances.

Beforehand, our projection gave Malta a 47% chance of winning, against 23% for Gibraltar and 30% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.46 for the home side and 0.94 for the visitors. The final result, with Gibraltar salvaging a point thanks to a single moment of brilliance, strayed from that forecast and confirms that, in soccer, volume of play doesn't always translate onto the scoreboard.

What the result means

With this draw, Malta moves to 4 points in Group D1, holding onto top spot, while Gibraltar sits on 2 points, 2 points behind. Both sides remain unbeaten in terms of losses, though Malta is the only one of the two to have already picked up a win so far in the competition. For a team that dominated so clearly, splitting the points feels like a missed opportunity. For Gibraltar, on the other hand, the point earned away from home, courtesy of a sensational strike, counts as a small triumph.
