US Rout Peru 4-1 With Eleven Debutants, Eight of Them Teenagers

Eleven debutants in a single match. Eight of them teenagers. And two of them scoring in their first appearance in a US shirt. This was not the typical night of grinding and struggle so often associated with national team soccer. In Orlando, it was a celebration of homegrown talent, capped by a resounding 4-1 win over Peru.

The first to make his mark was Justin Ellis, who headed home a Giovanni Reyna cross in the 4th minute to put the United States ahead in front of the home fans of his own club, Orlando City. Julian Hall's goal followed soon after, and together the pair achieved something not seen since 2018, when Josh Sargent and Timothy Weah scored on their debuts against Bolivia: becoming the first pair of teenagers to score in their full debuts for the national team.

Peru equalized in the 14th minute through Gianluca Lapadula, on a sequence that exposed some of the debutants' inexperience: George Campbell first lost the ball in his own half, and Peyton Miller was then caught out of position against the Peruvian forward. But that was about the only blemish on an otherwise excellent team performance. Malik Tillman converted a penalty (awarded for a foul on fellow debutant Mathis Albert, one that some felt happened outside the box) and Sebastian Berhalter sealed the scoring with a long range strike that rocketed into the back of the net.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino made no secret of his satisfaction with the newcomers.

But the Argentine coach was also quick to credit the veterans, who gave so many new faces the platform to express themselves freely. Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah and Tillman himself formed a battle tested starting midfield, and Adams, wearing the captain's armband for the first time under Pochettino, explained how he sees his role as a guide for the group.

Ellis' goal and the bond with Reyna

Ellis did not hide his emotion at scoring in the very stadium where he plays every weekend for his club.

The connection with Reyna was no coincidence. Reyna himself had told Ellis the night before that he would set him up for a goal. "I told him I wanted to get him a goal. He's been working really hard in training and performing really well in MLS, he deserves it," said the midfielder, who knows firsthand what it's like to carry expectations as a young player and now plays the role of big brother in the locker room.

Sullivan, the name generating the most buzz

If there was one debutant under the spotlight, it was Cavan Sullivan, just 16 years old, who arrived at camp with six goals and eight assists in his last eight league matches for the Philadelphia Union. He grew into the game down the right flank, caused problems for Peru's defense, and even picked up a yellow card in the 23rd minute after a collision with Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. He did not score or assist, but the youngster kept things in perspective.

With the international window still ongoing, three more matches remain, including Concacaf clashes against Mexico and Canada. Some of these players will keep growing with this kind of exposure, while others will have to learn the hard way. For now, the process Pochettino has started looks, above all, fun.
