Valencia and Celta Play Out Scoreless Draw at Mestalla
Both sides squandered chances in a stalemate that split the points at the start of LaLiga.

Valencia and Celta Vigo played to a 0-0 draw at Mestalla, a split of points that produced more missed chances than goals and confirmed the even start both clubs have had in the opening weeks of LaLiga. Neither side found the net despite flashes of danger, in a match bogged down by fouls and short on clear openings.
A duel of squandered chances
The first warning came early, with a header from Marcos Alonso in the 12th minute that clipped the crossbar off a Miguel Roman cross from a free kick. Celta kept pushing through Aleix Febas, who tried his luck from outside the box in the 22nd minute, though his shot was saved right under the crossbar. A couple of minutes later, Jones El Abdellaoui wasted a Celta counterattack, failing to hit the target after being set up by Hugo Alvarez.
Valencia answered through Arnaut Danjuma, who emerged as the home side's sharpest attacking threat: he tested the Celta goal in the 25th minute and again just before halftime, though neither effort found the frame. Filip Ugrinic also had a warning chance right at the end of the first half, with a shot turned away by Ionut Radu. Despite all of that, the score remained level at the break.
The second half followed the same script: end to end, but no breakthrough. Pablo Duran, on for Celta after the switch, forced a save out of Dimitrievski with a shot from outside the area in the 65th minute. Danjuma tried again in the 70th minute off another counterattack, and late on, Marcos Alonso had the clearest chance for Celta in the 88th minute, with a shot that drifted just wide of the right post. The match closed out with five minutes of stoppage time added, and neither net ever rippled.
The numbers behind the draw
| Stat | Valencia | Celta Vigo |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 44.4 | 55.6 |
| Shots | 8 | 7 |
| Shots on target | 2 | 3 |
| Corners | 1 | 2 |
| Passes | 486 | 616 |
| Fouls committed | 17 | 17 |
Celta controlled more of the ball and racked up more passes, a reflection of their attempt to dictate the tempo from the back, but Valencia held its own in shot volume. Based on our own xG estimate calculated from the shots taken in the match, Celta generated 0.68 expected goals to Valencia's 0.57, a razor-thin gap that captures just how tight the contest was: neither team built a clear scoring edge despite the occasional chance.
Far from the projection
Our pre-match preview gave Valencia a 35% chance of winning, Celta the same 35%, and a draw 30%, with a projected total of 2.48 expected goals. Reality fell well short of that mark: the scoreless final result far undercut expectations of an open, goal-laden match, and in the end the least likely of the three outcomes, the draw, was exactly what played out.
What the match leaves behind
With this result, both Valencia and Celta Vigo sit on just 1 point after their opening match of the campaign, with a draw as their only result so far. The tie in the standings mirrors what unfolded on the Mestalla pitch: two teams that canceled each other out, with individual flashes from Danjuma, Marcos Alonso and Pablo Duran, but neither with the cutting edge needed to take all three points. Their next fixtures will give both sides a chance to get moving in the table.
