Valentín Barco joins Chelsea from Strasbourg to play under Xabi Alonso
The Argentine defender and midfielder, formerly of Boca Juniors, joins a club in rebuilding mode after a position switch reshaped his career.
Just a few months ago he was playing in France, for Racing Strasbourg. Now he trains at Cobham and dreams of pulling on the blue shirt some weekend at Stamford Bridge. The jump Valentín Barco made to Chelsea is the kind that changes a career overnight, and the player himself tells the story with a grin he doesn't bother hiding.
The Argentine defender and midfielder, formerly of Boca Juniors, arrived in London to join a project run by Xabi Alonso as head coach, and he's off to a strong start. "The first week was really good. I'm very happy to be here, to play for this club. It's huge, so my family and I are thrilled, and this was a great step to get back to the Premier League," said Barco, still running on the adrenaline of his first training sessions.
Why choose Chelsea at this point in his career? The player's own answer makes clear he didn't hesitate for a second. "I chose Chelsea because it's one of the best clubs in the world, so if Chelsea calls you, you have to say yes. I had a few conversations with Xabi Alonso, and to me he's one of the best in the world. He was one of the best players in my position, and now he's one of the top coaches out there," he said.

Before signing, Barco made sure to ask around inside the club. He spoke with Enzo Fernández and also with Andrey Santos, whom he already knew from his time at Strasbourg. "They told me Chelsea is top class," he added, like someone getting the seal of approval from two countrymen who already know the locker room from the inside.
From fullback to midfield: the switch that changed his career
What's striking is that Barco isn't arriving to repeat the left back role that made his name at Boca. His conversion to midfield ended up being, in his own words, a turning point. "I think the position change changed my life. It helped me enormously to get back to playing regularly, to become important for my team, to return to the Argentina national team, to go to the World Cup, and now to get back to the Premier League," he explained. He added something that sums up nicely why he enjoys it there so much: "I love it because you touch the ball a lot, and that way you control the tempo and rhythm of the match."
That stretch in midfield also restored his standing with the Argentina national team, with whom he took part in the 2026 World Cup, including minutes against Jordan, on top of appearances in pre-tournament friendlies where he even found the net.
A Chelsea side in rebuilding mode
The Blues aren't currently at Europe's top table: they won't be playing Champions League this season, and the club is going through a turnover process with Xabi Alonso in charge, having replaced Liam Rosenior, who, curiously enough, is the same coach who managed Barco at Strasbourg. That's no coincidence: Chelsea and Racing Strasbourg belong to the same ownership group, BlueCo, a corporate link that helped smooth the path for the transfer.
For Barco, the challenge is twofold: adjusting to the intensity of the Premier League while also staying in the picture for Argentina's upcoming call-ups. With Xabi Alonso watching closely and a handful of countrymen already settled in London, the Argentine begins this new chapter with his confidence fully intact.
