VAR Wipes Out Independiente Goal as Talleres Hold On for Scoreless Draw at the Kempes

VAR was the main character at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes. Seven minutes from time, Nahuel Banegas thought he had broken the deadlock, but a review wiped the goal off the board. Then, in the dying seconds of the match, with seven minutes of stoppage time on the clock, another video review decision confirmed the score would stay at 0-0. Talleres de Cordoba and Independiente played to a scoreless draw in the Argentina Primera Division, in a game that produced more chances than the final scoreline would suggest.

The first half opened with intent but without sharp finishing. Valentin Depietri had the game's first look for Talleres moments after kickoff, heading wide to the left off a Gabriel Baez cross. Independiente answered through Luciano Cabral, who shot straight at the goalkeeper from point-blank range in the 30th minute after a headed assist from Banegas, and a minute later it was Banegas himself who fired over the bar from outside the box. The clearest chance of the first half for the home side came off the boot of a visitor: in the 34th minute, Santiago Montiel's free kick from a tough angle crashed off the crossbar. Talleres also tested the Independiente goal through Giovanni Baroni, who fired two shots in quick succession late in the first half without finding the target.

The second half opened up a bit more. Independiente strung together a run of chances between the 56th and 63rd minutes through Chimy Avila, Santiago Montiel and Luciano Cabral, who had three separate tries without luck, one of them clipping the frame of the goal. Substitutions trickled in as the half wore on: Jadson Viera shuffled his bench with the introductions of Josias Palais and Ivan Morales, while Omar De Felippe countered with Diego Valoyes and Lautaro Ortiz.

The closing stretch was the most intense part of the match. With the game already deep into stoppage time, Banegas thought he had broken the deadlock in the 87th minute, but VAR disallowed the goal. Far from settling down, the match stretched into seven added minutes, during which Matias Catalan had one last header for Talleres that drifted just wide of the post, and a VAR review once again confirmed the scoreboard would not move.

What the Numbers Say

The stats point to an even match mixed with stretches of greater visiting-team dominance. Independiente was sharper in front of goal, though Talleres had a slight edge in overall possession.

In our own expected goals estimate, calculated after the fact based on shot locations, Independiente generated 0.745 compared to Talleres' 0.40, a gap that lines up with the visitors' greater attacking volume, though neither side managed to turn that into an actual goal.

The preview numbers had pointed to an even contest: we projected a 31 percent chance of a Talleres win, a 33 percent chance of a draw and a 36 percent chance of an Independiente victory, with a combined expected goals total of 2.14. The draw ended up being, of the three outcomes, the one that actually happened, though the match fell well short of that scoring expectation, in no small part due to the VAR interventions that denied Independiente the win.

What the Standings Show

In Group A, Independiente came into the match in fifth place with 18 points and Talleres in fifteenth with 9, a gap of 9 points between the two sides before this round. The draw doesn't change the picture much: Talleres remain at the bottom of the group with a goal difference of -7, while Independiente stay stuck in the middle of the table, unable to close the gap on the top spots held by Instituto and Defensa y Justicia. For Talleres, the point feels thin given the chances they created; for Independiente, it's a bittersweet result after watching VAR wipe away what could have been a late win.
