The final score read 0-0, but the story of the match ran through a video review room in Helsinki. Finland and Belarus played to a scoreless draw at the Olympic Stadium in the Finnish capital, in a Group C1 clash of the UEFA Nations League that reached its boiling point when the referee waved off a visiting goal after a video review.

It happened in the 64th minute: Aleksandr Selyava poked the ball home after a string of shots Finland had somehow managed to keep out, but VAR stepped in and the goal never made it onto the scoreboard. Three minutes later, in the 67th minute, came the official word: no goal. The buildup had been a Belarusian onslaught, with Vladislav Kalinin, Trofim Melnichenko, who also rattled the crossbar, and Anton Kovalev testing their aim in a furious spell between the 63rd and 64th minutes.

Finnish dominance that went unrewarded

Before that episode, the match had told a different story. Finland controlled the ball comfortably for long stretches of the first half and created the clearer chances: Joel Pohjanpalo tested the keeper from close range in the 6th minute, Leo Walta went close twice in the 11th, grazing the crossbar, and Adam Stahl headed just wide from a Walta cross in the 22nd. On the other side, once the substitutions had been made, Belarus produced its most dangerous spell between the 63rd and 64th minutes, right before the disallowed goal, and still managed a couple more attempts through Valeri Gromyko and Melnichenko in the second half, plus a header from Max Ebong in the 86th minute. Neither side found the back of the net.

The match also produced yellow cards for Artem Shumanskiy, Anton Lukashov, Kaan Kairinen and Adam Stahl, in a second half that was scrappier than the first, but the moment everyone will remember is the goal that existed for three minutes before VAR wiped it off the board.
