Vélez hosts Defensa y Justicia at the Amalfitani with first place on the line

El Fortín arrives unbeaten with 10 points and wants to pull away at the top of the table against a rival with 7 points that comes in motivated after a home win.

First place in Group A is on the line on Monday, August 17, at the José Amalfitani, when Vélez hosts Defensa y Justicia in matchday five of the 2026 Torneo Clausura. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. (Argentina and Uruguay time), with live coverage on TNT Sports.

Vélez still hasn't tasted defeat in this Clausura and wants to use its home turf in Liniers to open up a bit more distance at the top. Guillermo Barros Schelotto's side won its first three matchdays before settling for a 1-1 draw on the road against Boca, played at Huracán's stadium. With that result, El Fortín sits on 10 points and remains atop Group A, though it knows a stumble at home could shrink the lead it worked so hard to build.

On the other side comes a Defensa y Justicia team that isn't holding anything back. Julio Vaccari's side is coming off a 2-1 win over Newell's at home and has seven points, just three behind the leader. The math is simple: a win in Liniers would pull them level with Vélez on points and add extra spice to the top of the group. This is no ordinary visitor coming to the Amalfitani.

Names to watch

For Vélez, all eyes are on Manuel Lanzini, who brings control and rhythm to the midfield, along with Diego Valdés and Matías Pellegrini, two players capable of breaking open a tight match with a pass or a finish.

Defensa y Justicia has its own strong cards to play. David Barbona is a guaranteed goal threat up front, while Tomás Pérez and Agustín Hausch round out a midfield with good touch and range, exactly what Vaccari's team will need to hurt a Vélez side that hasn't lost in a while.

The recent head to head between these two already hinted at how close this could be. The last time they met was on February 13 of this year, in the Torneo Apertura, and the result was 1-1 in Florencio Varela. That day, Juan Gutiérrez opened the scoring for Defensa y Justicia, but Pellegrini popped up to equalize for Vélez, the same player who is once again one of El Fortín's key attacking references today.

With an unbeaten run it wants to extend and a rival arriving in good form after a home win, Monday's match has all the makings of a small final within the group stage. Vélez needs a win to keep breathing room at the top of the table; Defensa needs one to fully jump into the fight. Neither side seems willing to give up points this early in the tournament.
