The Brazilian was celebrating what looked like a 2-0 lead over Villarreal when VAR spotted him pulling Saliba's hair, and the referee showed him a straight red card.

Vinícius scores, VAR wipes it out, then sends him off against Villarreal

He had the goal in his legs and the red card on his neck, all in the same play. That's how strange the sequence was for Vinícius Júnior in Real Madrid's match against Villarreal, a whiplash of emotions that ended with the Brazilian off the field before he could celebrate anything.

The forward had come on from the bench in the 52nd minute, looking to give Madrid's attack a fresh spark. And he found it: on a run from Jude Bellingham down the right flank, Vinícius broke into the box, took the pass and finished to make it what looked like 2-0 in the 71st minute.

The celebration didn't last long. The referee stopped play so VAR could review the buildup to the shot, and that's when the problem turned up: the replay showed that, during his run into the box, Vinícius had pulled Nathan Saliba's hair. The goal was disallowed on the spot.

But the story didn't end with the disallowed goal. The referee decided the infraction deserved more than just a foul and showed the Brazilian a red card, leaving Real Madrid down a man in the closing stretch of the match.

Vinícius's reaction was pure fury. He went straight at the referee to argue the call, visibly rattled by the decision, and it took his own teammates holding him back to keep things from getting out of hand. Amid shoving and gestures of frustration, the Brazilian left the field in a mix of confusion and anger, aware that in a matter of seconds he had gone from hero to ejected.

A play that had everything: Bellingham's run, Vinícius's finish, the VAR review and, in the end, the image of a player watching his goal and his place in the match vanish over a detail he himself didn't seem to notice in the heat of the moment.
