Vozinha debuts for Colo Colo: clean sheet in 3-0 Copa Chile rout

The Cape Verdean goalkeeper, a standout at the 2026 World Cup, played his first official match for the Cacique at the Nacional against Union Espanola.

There were no more excuses and no more time on the bench. Vozinha finally took the field in a Colo Colo jersey, and he did it in the best way possible: a clean sheet and a rout. The Cape Verdean goalkeeper, who became one of the standout names of the 2026 World Cup with Cape Verde's surprise run, made his official debut for the Cacique in a 3-0 win over Union Espanola, played at the Estadio Nacional, closing out the group stage of the Copa Chile.

The wait had been long for the Colo Colo faithful. Vozinha arrived in Chile about three weeks ago, after his performances with Cape Verde at the World Cup opened the door to a big South American club. Still, he had to settle for watching from the bench in the team's opening matches. On Wednesday, he finally got the call to start between the posts, and he didn't have much work to do: Colo Colo's dominance on the field left Union Espanola without answers and gave the goalkeeper a quiet afternoon, aside from the nerves that come with a long-awaited debut.

What stands out is that this debut, in a cup match against a team that isn't exactly a traditional rival of the "Cacique," didn't go unnoticed outside Chile. Vozinha's emergence at the World Cup with Cape Verde, a first-time World Cup qualifier, made such an impact that media outlets across different continents closely followed his first steps with the albos.

Worldwide attention for a Copa Chile debut

In the United States, The Washington Post ran the headline "Vozinha, World Cup standout, debuts with Colo Colo," and noted that the goalkeeper "stood out during Cape Verde's World Cup debut" before finally suiting up for the "powerful Chilean club." From England, The Independent focused on the context of his arrival, noting that Vozinha "caused a sensation" with the Cape Verdean national team and that his move to Chile came just three weeks after he secured a contract "thanks to his stunning performances on the World Cup stage."

In Peru, Depor ran the headline "The debut has arrived!" and recapped how the 40-year-old goalkeeper had been relegated to the bench in previous matches until he finally got his minutes, kept a clean sheet, and was "applauded and cheered" by the fans at the Nacional. The Peruvian outlet also noted that the veteran goalkeeper's next goal is to make his first appearance in the Chilean league. Meanwhile, Mexico's TUDN summed up the news in a few words: "Vozinha debuts for Colo Colo in rout of Union Espanola in the Copa Chile." And in the Dominican Republic, Diario Libre called it a "dream debut," highlighting that the goalkeeper "wins over the fans" with his first performance.

At 40 years old and with a World Cup still fresh in his legs, Vozinha is off to the best possible start in his Chilean football story. A clean sheet and the backing of the crowd at the Nacional make for a calling card that's hard to top for a goalkeeper who arrived with the label of World Cup standout.
