Alianza Lima vs Universitario: a high-voltage clasico for the Clausura title

This is the kind of Saturday that brings the country to a standstill. On September 12, Alianza Lima and Universitario face off again in the season's second clasico of 2026, and this time there's an extra edge: both teams need all three points to stay in the hunt for the Clausura title.

Alianza arrives with a thorn in its side: the club hasn't beaten the 'U' in a clasico in three years, and at home in Matute, the drought runs even deeper, nearly eight years without a win over its archrival in front of its own fans. Universitario, for its part, knows it can't afford another stumble if it wants to stay alive in the Clausura race.

The history between these two clubs runs deep, stretching back almost a century. The first clasico was played on September 23, 1928, and Universitario won it 1-0. Since then, the two sides have met 377 times, and Alianza holds the edge in the all-time series: 143 wins to Universitario's 128, with 106 draws in between. The blanquiazules also lead in goals scored (496 to 456), in lopsided wins, in comebacks pulled off, in unbeaten streaks and in consecutive victories.

That said, if you narrow the count to official matches only, the numbers even out considerably. Alianza still leads, but by the slimmest of margins: 112 wins to Universitario's 109. In that count, every clasico carries real weight, and every result can tip the balance of a rivalry that gets decided match by match.

Where Universitario has the edge

There's one area where Universitario clearly outdoes its eternal rival: playoff deciders. The 'U' has won 10 such deciders compared to Alianza's 3, and four of those Universitario wins came in nothing less than finals for the Primera Division title: 1987, 1999, 2009 and 2023. Alianza has its own share of glory in this department too, since two of its three deciders resulted in a season title, in 1928 and 1955.

Universitario also leads the individual records. Jose Luis Carranza holds the mark for most clasico appearances in history, with 61 matches played, while Lolo Fernandez remains the all-time leading scorer in clasico history with 29 goals, a record that has stood the test of time.

With all those numbers on the table, Saturday's clasico arrives with all the usual intensity, and on top of that, with a standings table that leaves no room for mistakes. Alianza needs to snap two historic droughts: three years without beating the 'U', and nearly eight without celebrating at Matute against its archrival. Universitario, meanwhile, knows that a slip-up could seriously damage its chances in the Clausura.
