The name is now confirmed, and it's bound to spark debate right up until Saturday: Micke Palomino will referee Alianza Lima vs. Universitario, the most anticipated clash of the year, in Matchday 9 of the Clausura in the 2026 Liga 1 season.

The appointment comes from the National Referees Commission (CONAR) and settles one of the questions that had been circulating heavily beforehand. For several days, Sebastian Lozano was rumored to be the pick for Matute, but the young official will instead handle another assignment that same weekend: Sport Boys vs. Deportivo Garcilaso, in Callao.

For Palomino, 44 years old and with more than a decade of experience officiating in Peruvian soccer, this will be a special first: he has never taken charge of a derby before. He'll do so, on top of that, in a difficult stretch for Peruvian officiating, which has come under heavy scrutiny in several recent matchdays. The weight of getting a match of this magnitude right is not lost on him.

A referee both sides can smile about

If there's one thing that might ease supporters' nerves on both sides, it's the track record. Palomino has already been in charge of Alianza Lima three times this Clausura, and the blanquiazules have not lost any of them: they routed UTC in Cajamarca, beat Sport Huancayo at Matute, and drew with Melgar in Arequipa.

The picture is similar with Universitario. The cream-and-white side is also unbeaten under him in their last two meetings: they beat ADT 2-0 at the Monumental and defeated FC Cajamarca 3-2 on Matchday 5 of this same Clausura. In other words, neither of the two protagonists has lost a match refereed by Palomino so far this tournament, something that will likely take a bit of pressure off the appointment.

The full officiating crew is set for the occasion. Palomino will have Michael Orue and Stephen Atoche as assistant referees, while Alexander Blas will serve as the fourth official. In the VAR booth, tasked with reviewing the controversial plays that tend to crop up in matches like this one, will be Alejandro Villanueva and Raul Lopez.
