Atlanta pushes but D.C. United holds on: 0-0 at Audi Field

The final score read 0-0, but the game at Audi Field was anything but even. Atlanta United spent all 90 minutes pressing against a D.C. United side that sat back and held firm, and in the end the point felt like little consolation for the visitors, who kept running into the last line of the home defense.

The MLS matchup opened with D.C. United looking to strike on the counter: in the 7th minute, Nathan Ordaz tested the keeper with a shot from inside the box that flew high and wide to the right, set up by Louis Munteanu. It was one of the few real scares the home side produced all night. Atlanta answered almost immediately through Breel Embolo, who forced a save from the center of the box just two minutes later, and from that point on Atlanta took control of the ball and never let go.

Miguel Almiron was a constant menace down the left: between the 30th and 68th minutes he tried his luck several times, always close but never quite finding the finish. Aleksey Miranchuk also had a couple of warning shots, first in the 14th minute with a long-range effort that clipped the crossbar, then again in the 85th, already in the second half, with another shot that was stopped right under the bar. Atlanta's best chance came in stoppage time: in the 93rd minute, with the match all but over, Luke Brennan headed a ball off the post, the last and most painful blow to D.C. United's goal on a night when the home side's net somehow held.

D.C. United, for its part, barely troubled the opposition. Its clearest chance also came off a header, from Tai Baribo in the 64th minute, which sailed too high after a cross from Kimito Nono. The rest of the match was spent defending lines, cutting off passing lanes and waiting for a mistake that never fully materialized, though D.C. United didn't need to exploit any opposing lapse to grab the point.

The numbers back up the dominance

The stats make it clear who was in charge. Atlanta controlled the ball for nearly the entire match and multiplied its attempts on goal:

The xG generated in the match, an in-house estimate calculated from the shots taken, also reflects that gap: 0.45 for D.C. United versus 1.88 for Atlanta United. Nineteen shots to just four tell the story of a team that attacked nonstop and another that dropped back and held on however it could.

The projection we published ahead of the match gave 40% odds to a D.C. United win, 28% to a draw and 32% to an Atlanta United win, with a combined total of 2.89 expected goals. The result ended up defying that scoring expectation: there was no offensive show, just a scoreless draw born from the home side's saves and defensive order, more than from a match that was tightly contested in terms of play.

In the Eastern Conference table, this draw leaves both sides in uncomfortable spots in the standings: D.C. United stays in 11th place with 29 points, while Atlanta United remains in 14th place with 23, separated by a gap of 6 points. Neither team got what it needed, though for Atlanta the taste is more bitter: it dominated, created chance after chance, and hit the post in the final gasp without being able to take home the win the match seemed to owe it.
