Atlas Holds Off Tigres for 2-1 Win at the Jalisco Despite Playing a Man Down From the 69th Minute

The Rojinegros came out on top at home thanks to goals from Capasso and Esteves, while Tigres dominated but couldn't convert a lopsided edge in chances, including a missed penalty.

Atlas Holds Off Tigres for 2-1 Win at the Jalisco Despite Playing a Man Down From the 69th Minute

Atlas beat Tigres 2-1 at Estadio Jalisco in a Liga MX match that the Rojinegros ended up winning despite playing more than twenty minutes with a man down and being thoroughly outplayed for long stretches. Manuel Capasso opened the scoring in the first minute, Juan Brunetta equalized for the Felinos before the half-hour mark, and Luís Esteves, already in the second half, scored the goal that delivered the three points to the home side.

A lightning start and a comeback that never arrived

The match could hardly have started better for Atlas: barely a minute in, off a cross from Arturo González, Manuel Capasso headed home from close range to make it 1-0. The early blow forced Tigres to respond, and they did so relentlessly, generating chance after chance from corners and shots from outside the box until, in the 20th minute, Juan Brunetta leveled the score with a low strike from distance, assisted by Rodrigo Aguirre.

The rest of the first half was largely a one-way procession of Tigres chances, with Diego Sánchez, Rômulo and Brunetta himself all testing their luck without success, and the first half closed at 1-1. In the second half, the match took a decisive turn: in the 67th minute VAR overturned an initial red card shown to Juan Purata, but just two minutes later, in the 69th, the Atlas defender was sent off anyway. Down to ten men, the home side withstood wave after wave of Tigres pressure, which included a Brunetta shot off the crossbar and another effort that also came back off the woodwork, until in the 80th minute Luís Esteves, assisted by Édgar Zaldívar, finished with a low shot to make it 2-1. Tigres had one last chance to equalize in the 84th minute, when Brunetta missed a penalty awarded after a foul by Gustavo Ferrareis on Diego Sánchez, but the shot went wide and the score held despite nine minutes of stoppage time.

The numbers reflect a dominance that fell short

The stats confirm that Tigres was clearly the better side in terms of controlling the game, but not where it mattered most: putting the ball in the net.

Our own expected goals estimate for the match backs up that reading: Tigres racked up 3.421 xG compared to just 1.099 for Atlas, a massive gap that confirms the Felinos squandered a considerable number of chances, made worse by Brunetta's missed penalty in the closing stretch.

A preview that only partly held up

The projection published ahead of the match gave Atlas a 48% chance of winning, a 24% chance of a draw, and 28% for a Tigres win, with a total expected goals figure of 3.5 (2 for the home side and 1.5 for the visitors). The final result, 2-1, ended up matching the favoritism given to Atlas, though the way the match unfolded, with Tigres dominating possession and creating far more chances, contrasted with the expectation of a more proactive Atlas side.

What the result means

With this win, Atlas reached 9 points from 4 matches played, with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss, sitting just behind Monterrey, who also has 9 points. Tigres, meanwhile, remains stuck near the bottom of the table with just 1 point from 4 matches, the product of 3 losses and a draw, a reality that stands in stark contrast to what was shown on the field at Estadio Jalisco. Atlas's efficiency in front of goal, combined with the Purata red card that ultimately failed to stop the home side, produced a win that will carry far more weight in the standings than the run of play suggested.
