Atlético Madrid Shuts Down Any Julián Álvarez Talks With Barcelona

The soap opera is over, at least as far as Atlético Madrid is concerned. The Madrid club released a statement on Thursday putting everything in writing: Julián Álvarez is not joining Barcelona. That's exactly how they put it, leaving no room for interpretation.

For weeks now, the same background noise has persisted: that Laporta wants him, that Atlético is standing firm, that the player is pushing for a move. Well, the club itself took the unusual step of settling the matter publicly, something that's not common in this kind of negotiation. Atlético's board "unanimously expressed its full support for the club's decision not to negotiate the transfer of Julián Álvarez to Barcelona," according to the statement.

What's striking is how they justified it. There's no mention of money, sporting needs, or wanting to keep hold of their forward because of his performances. Instead, they focused on conduct. The statement says Atlético "is open to standard market negotiations when they are carried out in a professional, ethical and respectful manner" and that "Barcelona did not meet these requirements." Their conclusion was blunt: "There will be no negotiation whatsoever and there is zero consideration of a transfer of Álvarez to Barcelona."

That's the message, aimed straight at Can Barça, without any further detail on exactly what they felt was handled improperly.

A forward caught in the crossfire

For Julián Álvarez, none of this has come without a cost. The Argentine was left out of the squad for Atlético's league opener, and when he came on as a substitute in the season's second match on Sunday, a section of the Atlético faithful greeted him with whistles. He did not train with the rest of the squad on Wednesday, the very same day Barcelona president Joan Laporta insisted his club's offer for the 26-year-old forward still stood, saying, in his words, "it seems the player wants to come to Barça."

Atlético, however, left the door open to mending fences with its own player. The statement closed with a direct message to Álvarez: the club "trusts that our player will understand the decision and will remain focused on helping the club achieve its goals, just as he has done over the two seasons he has spent wearing our colors."

The figure hanging over this whole saga is Álvarez's release clause, set at around 500 million euros (roughly $582 million), an amount that on its own explains why any departure was always going to depend entirely on Atlético's willingness and not on a conventional offer. Meanwhile, Arsenal's name also came up this week as a potential suitor for the forward, the reigning Premier League champions, though no concrete moves emerged.

For now, Atlético's message is clear and leaves no gray area: Julián Álvarez remains an Atlético player, whether some of the club's fans like it or not, and Barcelona will have to look elsewhere if it wants to bolster its attack this summer.
