Barcelona rolls past Aston Villa 3-0, but Rodri's halftime exit raises alarm

Flick confirmed the midfielder will undergo medical tests this Wednesday, with the clash against Atletico Madrid looming.

The number that mattered most by the end of the night wasn't the scoreline. Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 win over Aston Villa in the Champions League, but attention quickly shifted to the condition of Rodri, who didn't come back out for the second half.

Hansi Flick didn't dance around it after the match: the midfielder will undergo medical tests this Wednesday to find out exactly what's wrong. The timing couldn't be more pressing, with Sunday's showdown against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano on the horizon, a match that could shake up the LaLiga standings significantly.

"We'll see how he is tomorrow. He was also tired and I wanted to substitute him," explained the German coach, not making too much of it but not hiding the uncertainty either.

Marc Bernal came on for Rodri at halftime, and later Flick made changes up front too, pulling both Pedri and Raphinha with Sunday's clash against Atletico already in mind. The minutes management made it clear exactly where the coach's head is at these days.

A defense that's becoming a habit

Beyond the physical scare, there's a stat Flick likes to bring up: Barcelona has now gone eighteen matches in Europe without conceding a goal. That's no small feat.

"It's been important to defend all together, as a team, very compact. We've been at a very good level, the defense has been fantastic and so has Joan Garcia. We've seen young players perform at a great level," said the German coach, who had plenty of praise for an Aston Villa side he described as "a very good team," against whom the plan was to force mistakes. "That's what we did, and it was important to defend with and without the ball, and with confidence," he added.

Before getting into the soccer, Flick made a gesture that didn't go unnoticed: he offered condolences to the family, the club and the friends of Jesus de Miguel. Turning back to the match itself, he stressed that after losing to PSG and Real Madrid in the previous weeks, the priority was to respond. "The most important thing that can happen in soccer and in life is how you react. That's why you have to keep looking forward," he said.

The other big story of the night had a name: Raphinha, who scored twice to reach 13 goals in seven matches this season at Camp Nou. Flick also touched on the return of Frenkie de Jong, back after more than three months out injured. "He's not at one hundred percent physically, but he's at a good level. He'll go back to being the excellent player he is, because he has so much quality," the coach said, adding pieces right when he needs them most, with Atletico lurking just four days away.
