Batrakov's Three-Minute Double Sinks Stuttgart and Hands Galatasaray the Win
Galatasaray won 2-0 in the Champions League thanks to two first-half goals from Batrakov, even though Stuttgart created more clear-cut chances over the course of the match.

It took Aleksey Batrakov just three minutes to settle the match. In the 11th minute he opened the scoring with a right-footed strike from the center of the box that flew into the top corner, and in the 14th minute he struck again, this time finishing through the middle of the goal after an assist from Davinson Sánchez. That 2-0 scoreline held at RAMS Park, and that's how the match between Galatasaray and VfB Stuttgart in the Champions League finished.
The number is striking because Stuttgart was far from passive: the German side created chances throughout the 90 minutes and finished with more big chances than Galatasaray itself. But the Turkish side struck first, and with a precision Stuttgart simply couldn't match in front of goal.
How the result came together
The match opened with intensity and fouls on both sides, and in the seventh minute Jamie Leweling had already given a warning with a shot that crashed off the post following a cross from Maximilian Mittelstädt. But it was Galatasaray who struck first: Batrakov popped up twice in barely three minutes to complete a double that completely changed the script of the match. Stuttgart responded with attempts from Deniz Undav and Bilal El Khannouss, but neither Victor Osimhen on one end nor the German shots on the other could move the scoreboard again. The first half ended with the 2-0 scoreline already in place, and the second half, despite the substitutions and the efforts of Leroy Sané, Rafael Leão and Tiago Tomás in the closing stages, produced no further goals. Stuttgart kept pushing until the end, even with a header from Tiago Tomás in the 90th minute, but Galatasaray's goal held firm.
The numbers behind the match
Possession was split fairly evenly, with a slight edge for the home side, and total shots finished tied. Where there was a real difference was in big chances, with Stuttgart ahead, something also reflected in the estimated xG drawn from the match's shots: 1.287 for Galatasaray and 2.377 for Stuttgart. It's an in-house calculation done after the fact, not a prediction, but it makes clear the German side generated more danger than the final score suggests.
| Stat | Galatasaray | Stuttgart |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 52.2 | 47.8 |
| Shots | 13 | 13 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 5 |
| Big chances | 2 | 4 |
| Corners | 6 | 4 |
| Passes | 376 | 334 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 16 |
Before the match, the projection we published in our preview gave a 37% probability to a home win, 38% to an away win and 25% to a draw, with expected goals fairly even at 1.76 for Galatasaray and 1.79 for Stuttgart. The result ended up tilting clearly toward the home side, something the forecast hadn't anticipated so sharply: the matchup looked even on paper, but instead it was settled by a decisive burst from Batrakov that Stuttgart could never overturn, despite having created more clear-cut chances across the full 90 minutes.
What the result leaves behind
In the tournament standings, Galatasaray arrives at this result with a record of two wins and two losses in four matches played, while Stuttgart has two wins, a draw and a loss in its own four appearances; the gap between the two sides in the table is just one point. For the Turkish side, the win comes after a difficult stretch in the competition, while Stuttgart is left with the feeling of having created enough danger to earn more than nothing on the scoreboard. Batrakov's double, wrapped up in barely three minutes of the first half, ended up being the difference between two teams that, across the rest of the stats, were almost evenly matched.
