Beier's close-range strike sinks Stuttgart as Dortmund wins 0-1

One close-range finish was all it took to settle this one. In the 69th minute, Maximilian Beier tapped in a cross from Jobe Bellingham from point-blank range to give Borussia Dortmund a 0-1 win at the MHPArena, in a Bundesliga clash that VfB Stuttgart had chances to level but never quite managed to.

The first half was tight and goalless. Dortmund started the brighter of the two sides, with Beier testing the keeper with a header in the 3rd minute and Nico Schlotterbeck following up with another aerial attempt shortly after. Stuttgart answered in kind: Josha Vagnoman and Ermedin Demirovic both had chances, and Bilal El Khannouss nearly put the hosts ahead with a header that drifted just wide in the 33rd minute. Yellow cards were handed out along the way, to Demirovic, Angelo Stiller and Schlotterbeck, but neither side could break the deadlock before the break.

Dortmund raised the tempo in the second half with a pair of substitutions. Jobe Bellingham and Konstantinos Karetsas came on in the 61st minute for Joey Veerman and Ethan Nwaneri, and immediately added life to the visitors' attack. Karetsas gave a warning sign with a low shot that Fabian Bredlow saved in the 69th minute, and the very next play brought the goal: a Bellingham cross and a Beier finish made it 0-1, a scoreline that would hold to the final whistle.

Stuttgart kept pushing until the end. Bilal El Khannouss, Grischa Prömel, Josha Vagnoman and, deep into stoppage time, Leo Sauer all had chances, but either lacked the finishing touch or ran into a defense that closed down space well. The hosts finished with more possession and more corners, but lacked precision in the final third.

Stuttgart controlled the ball more and generated a higher volume of play, but Dortmund was sharper when it mattered most.

The most striking figure comes from the expected goals model we calculate from the match's shots: Dortmund generated 2.03 xG compared to Stuttgart's 0.70. It's a number calculated after the fact, not a prediction, but it reflects that the visitors' chances carried more real danger, even with fewer total shots.

That reading contrasts with what we projected beforehand, when we gave Stuttgart a 38% chance of winning, Dortmund 37%, and a draw 25%, with combined expected goals of 3.49 (1.77 for the hosts and 1.72 for the visitors). The match ended up being far tighter than that forecast suggested: a single goal and a narrow scoreline, well short of the more than three combined goals we had anticipated.

The match made clear that Dortmund didn't need to dominate possession to take the three points: all it needed was to strike at the right moment, just minutes after injecting fresh legs off the bench.
