Boca edges River in Argentine soccer's all-time title count

Some debates in Argentine soccer never get fully settled, but this one has the numbers to back it up. Add together everything won since the amateur era through the professional age, and one club stands above the rest: Boca Juniors, with 74 titles in its history.

Right behind is the team that knows the feeling of finishing second all too well: River Plate, with 72 titles. Just two titles separate the country's two most popular clubs, which goes a long way toward explaining why every Superclasico feels like there's more than three points on the line.

So what does the picture look like a step further down? The rest of the podium belongs to Independiente, with 45 titles, a club that built much of its historical identity around international cups. Right on its heels is its Avellaneda rival, Racing Club, with 41.

A step further back, but with a history all its own

From there, the gaps start to widen. San Lorenzo and Alumni share fifth place, each with 22 titles, a notable detail considering Alumni is one of those names that traces directly back to the origins of Argentine soccer, back in the amateur days.

Further down sit Velez Sarsfield and Estudiantes de La Plata, with 19 titles each, two clubs that at different points in history managed to go toe to toe with the so called "big five." Next come Rosario Central, with 14, and Huracan, with 13.

Rounding out this part of the list are Newell's Old Boys and Lanus, each with 9 titles to their name. It's not the kind of total a historic powerhouse racks up, but for two clubs that have often grown in the shadow of others, it's still a number that carries real weight.

What makes this list interesting is that it doesn't separate eras: it blends championships from the early twentieth century with the most recent achievements, domestic and international alike. That's why it ends up working almost like a complete snapshot of more than a century of Argentine soccer, one where Boca and River keep setting the pace, but where every club on the list has its own story behind each title added to the count.
