Bulgaria and Estonia Share Goalless Draw in a Dominant but Fruitless Duel

Bulgaria controlled the game with more possession and shots, but couldn't get past a resilient Estonia side in a scoreless draw in Plovdiv in Group C4.

Bulgaria and Estonia Share Goalless Draw in a Dominant but Fruitless Duel

Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv went without goals, but not without chances. Bulgaria and Estonia played to a 0-0 draw in the UEFA Nations League, a result that leaves both sides feeling they left points on the table after controlling long stretches of the match without finding a way to solve it in front of goal.

The hosts came out with more purpose from the start. Bulgaria moved the ball better and created the first clear chance in the 14th minute, when Lukas Petkov tried his left foot from outside the box and sent it just wide, close to the post. Two minutes later, Zdravko Dimitrov fired over the bar after a pass from Ilia Gruev. Estonia, more uncomfortable on the ball, found their best moment from a direct free kick: in the 27th minute, Markus Poom rattled the left post, the biggest scare Bulgaria faced all first half.

The rest of the opening half was a back and forth of attempts without a decisive finish. Borislav Tsonev tried from the center of the box in the 35th minute and missed the target, Marin Petkov grazed the right post two minutes later, and Michael Schjønning-Larsen answered for Estonia with a shot that Bulgaria managed to block. Through it all, the score stayed level at halftime, both in the numbers and in the frustration.

A Livelier Second Half, but the Same Story

Bulgaria came out of the locker room with three changes at once, and that fresh energy showed in the chances created. Ilia Gruev tried from inside the box in the 48th minute off a pass from Petko Panayotov, and a minute later Marin Petkov fired a shot that whizzed just past the crossbar. The hosts kept piling up corners and shots: Stefan Velkov headed one in the 54th minute after a cross from Panayotov, and that pressure showed up in the final shot count, far higher than their opponent's.

Estonia, though, didn't back down in the moments that mattered. Mattias Mannilaan, who had come on at halftime, had a chance in the 56th minute from the center of the box, and later Patrik Kristal had two attempts between the 72nd and 74th minutes that Bulgaria managed to snuff out. The match turned into a stretch of blocked shots on both ends: Petko Panayotov fired one along the ground in the 70th minute that Estonia's goalkeeper held onto, and Kristian Dimitrov met a header at point blank range in the 61st minute but couldn't find the target.

As the clock ran down, neither goal gave way. Maksim Paskotsi tried a left footed shot in the 81st minute and Bulgaria's goalkeeper answered well, and in stoppage time, with three minutes added on, the match wound down amid fouls and yellow cards without either side forcing the issue.

What the Numbers Say

StatBulgariaEstonia
Possession (%)55.144.9
Shots176
Shots on target22
Corners66
Passes451360
Fouls committed926

The stats back up what showed on the field: Bulgaria was the team driving the game, with more possession, more passes and almost triple the shots of their opponent. Our xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken in the match, supports that idea, with 0.897 for Bulgaria compared to 0.621 for Estonia, though both numbers fall well short of guaranteeing a goal, which helps explain why the scoreless draw wasn't so surprising despite the home side's control. Estonia, for their part, leaned on defensive resolve and the occasional counter, though it came at the cost of racking up 26 fouls to their opponent's 9.

Where the Group Stands

The result leaves both teams separated by just a single point in Group C4. Estonia has 2 points from two matches played, with two draws and no goal difference, while Bulgaria sits on 1 point after a loss and a draw. Neither side got the result it needed in Plovdiv to close the gap on the top of the table, where Iceland and Luxembourg lead the way. The draw leaves mixed feelings: Bulgaria showed more going forward, but once again came away unable to turn that into a goal.
