Central and Newell's collide in the Rosario derby for matchday eight of the Clausura 2026
El Gigante de Arroyito hosts Newell's on Sunday, September 6 at 2:45 PM, in a cross-group clash where history outweighs the standings.
The Rosario derby returns to El Gigante de Arroyito and, as always when these two meet, the rest of the matchday seems like an afterthought. Rosario Central hosts Newell's on Sunday, September 6 at 2:45 PM (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile time; 1:45 PM for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador), for matchday eight of the Torneo Clausura 2026, with the broadcast airing on TNT Sports Premium.
What's curious about this matchup is that it doesn't settle anything directly in the standings: Central plays in Group B and Newell's in Group A, so it's a cross-group clash that doesn't hand out points between zone rivals. But in a derby of this magnitude, that matters little. When Central and Newell's play, the table gets set aside for a while and history takes over.
How both sides arrive
Central has already bid farewell to the Copa Libertadores, so the Clausura is now the sole focus for Jorge Almirón. The team arrives bruised, having fallen 2-1 to Gimnasia de La Plata at home last matchday, and has gone three games without a win across all competitions. A victory is needed to snap the skid, and there's no better opponent to do it against than the eternal rival. Ángel Di María remains the offensive reference point, joined by the likes of Jámiton Campaz, Giovanni Cantizano and Franco Ibarra.
Newell's arrives in a different mood. Under the guidance of Frank Darío Kudelka, the club drew 0-0 on the road against Estudiantes de La Plata and is now unbeaten in three straight matches, which allowed it to breathe a bit easier in the annual table. La Lepra travels with hopes of landing a blow right in the rival's backyard. Keep an eye on Matías Cóccaro, Walter Mazzantti, Facundo Gauch and Luca Regiardo.
What the history says
The all-time series between the two clubs, counting AFA league play as well as domestic and international cups, favors Central: of 197 matches played, there have been 67 wins for Central, 46 for Newell's and 82 draws. And the most recent meeting also went the Central's way: on March 1 of this year, Central won 2-0 on the road, with goals from Ángel Di María and Enzo Copetti.
Does that history add pressure to the players' minds? Probably, though every derby has its own logic, and neither coach will lean on numbers to prepare for the match. Central needs to rediscover winning form after three scoreless matchdays, and Newell's wants to ride its current momentum to achieve something that has eluded it for a while: breaking its losing streak in this fixture right on the rival's turf. El Gigante de Arroyito, once again, will host that same old battle.
