Barcelona and Atletico Madrid Clash in Champions League Hallways Over Julian Alvarez Remarks

The Champions League draw was supposed to be the headline of the day. Then, out of nowhere, in the mixed zone, something else took over: a war of words between two club vice presidents that pushed the pots and groups aside and put the name Julian Alvarez front and center.

It started with Miguel Angel Gil Marin, Atletico Madrid's CEO, speaking in front of Movistar's cameras. Asked about Barcelona's interest in the Argentine forward, the Atletico executive didn't hold back. He said Julian is "really bad off, because there have been people responsible for deceiving him and confusing him," and added that he finds the dishonesty coming from the Catalan club "repugnant." Strong words, direct, leaving no room for interpretation.

The response didn't take long. Minutes later, standing in front of that same Movistar microphone, it was Rafa Yuste's turn, Barcelona's vice president for sporting affairs. And he didn't hold anything back either.

For Yuste, what Gil Marin said wasn't just "out of line": he called it outright "a lack of manners and respect." A description that made clear just how seriously Barcelona took the Atletico executive's comment.

A Handshake Before the Storm

The curious part, according to Yuste himself, is that just moments before the draw there had been a cordial encounter. The Barcelona vice president crossed paths with Atletico president Enrique Cerezo and with "the Gil family," and they exchanged a few friendly words. "We exchanged a few words and shared our feelings. I told them the same thing I said on camera: that we're at ease because we've never done anything outside the bounds of sporting and professional standards as a club," he explained.

Yuste stressed that Barcelona respects Atletico Madrid "and every player in the world," and went further, defending something that sounds almost like common sense inside the Barcelona locker room: if a player wants to wear the blaugrana jersey, that, naturally, is "exciting." There's nothing strange about that, he suggested.

So is the move off the table? On that point, the vice president preferred not to close any doors and referred back to what president Joan Laporta had said on Wednesday, when he insisted that the offer presented to the Madrid club for Julian Alvarez remains on the table.

Still, Yuste admitted he felt "bad" about how things have unfolded over the past few days. And he closed with a line that sounded more like an internal message than anything else: "What I have to do is defend the professionals who are working in an exceptional way, and defend our president."

For now, the saga remains right there: an offer still on the table, a player caught in the middle of the noise, and two clubs that, in the middle of a European draw, ended up arguing about something that had nothing to do with pots or groups.
