City FC stuns Atlanta United with a 94th-minute winner
Traore scored in stoppage time to seal the 2-1 win after a Fernandez Mercau free kick and a late equalizer from Embolo.

The scoreboard barely moved all game, but the three times it did were enough for City FC to grind out a dramatic win: 2-1 over Atlanta United at Citi Field, with the decisive goal coming in the 94th minute. A match that looked headed for a draw was instead settled almost as the final whistle approached.
The first half was back and forth without a payoff, though Atlanta had the first real scare: in the 20th minute, Breel Embolo put the ball in the net, only for VAR to disallow the goal two minutes later after review. It was the clearest warning sign in an opening half in which both sides created chances but couldn't find a way through. The teams went into the break level at 0-0.
The free kick that broke the deadlock
The second half followed the same script until, in the 69th minute, Nicolas Fernandez Mercau stepped up to change the story: a left-footed free kick that curled in off the right side of the goal made it 1-0 for City FC. It looked like that goal might be enough, but Atlanta United refused to fold and found the equalizer as the clock ran down: in the 87th minute, Breel Embolo, this time with no one to stop him, headed home from close range to make it 1-1.
With the score level and the match deep into stoppage time, it seemed the two sides were destined to split the points. But City FC had one more card to play. In the 94th minute, assisted by Kevin O'Toole, Benie Traore finished with his right foot from outside the box to make it a final 2-1, a goal that closed out the match with almost no time left for a response.
What the numbers say
Atlanta United controlled more of the ball and created more chances, but couldn't turn that edge into a result.
| Stat | New York City FC | Atlanta United |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 46 | 54 |
| Shots | 11 | 19 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 6 |
| Big chances | 3 | 2 |
| Corners | 3 | 3 |
| Passes | 382 | 451 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 14 |
That gap in overall output also shows up in the post-match xG for this game: by our estimate, Atlanta United generated 2.294 expected goals compared to 1.697 for New York City FC. In other words, the visitors produced more and better chances, but it was the home side that made the most of the moments it had, including that stoppage-time finish.
The result also stands in contrast to our pre-match projection: we had given New York City FC a 53% chance of winning, 27% for a draw and just 20% for an Atlanta win, with expected goals of 1.69 for the home side and 0.97 for the visitors. The final outcome ended up matching that projection in terms of the result, though the path there was far tighter than those numbers suggested, with the draw holding right up until the final minutes.
What it means in the standings
In the Eastern Conference, New York City FC stays in 12th place with 38 points from 32 games played (9 wins, 11 draws, 12 losses), while Atlanta United sits in 14th with 30 points from the same number of games (8 wins, 6 draws, 18 losses). The gap between the two sides in the table is 8 points, and this result widens that margin slightly just as both clubs need wins to climb the standings in the stretch run of the MLS season.
