Cyprus holds on with ten men, beats Armenia 2-0 in Nations League

Konomis and Kakoullis put the hosts up quickly, and despite Pileas's red card and Armenia's total control of the second half, Cyprus held onto the result in Nations League Group C2.

Cyprus holds on with ten men, beats Armenia 2-0 in Nations League

In just twelve minutes, between the 18th and the 30th, Cyprus settled a match that later got far more complicated than it should have. Leonidas Konomis and Andronikos Kakoullis made it 2-0 at the GSP Stadium, and with Armenia controlling the ball for nearly the entire second half, that scoreline held all the way to the final whistle.

The first goal came from a corner kick: Konomis struck with his right foot from close range, low and inside the left post, putting the hosts ahead in the 18th minute. Cyprus wasted no time extending the lead. Twelve minutes later, Kakoullis finished with his left foot into the top corner from inside the box, assisted by Ioannis Pittas, making it 2-0, a scoreline that would stand for the rest of the match.

The opening stretch had offered warning signs from both sides: Marcus Edwards tested the Armenian goal early for Cyprus, while Erik Piloyan and Gor Manvelyan had their own chances for Armenia without finding the net. But it was the home side that struck first and struck better, heading into the break with a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.

A scare, red card included

The second half brought an unusual episode for Cyprus. In the 50th minute, VAR overturned a red card initially shown to Kostas Pileas, but barely a minute later, in the 51st, the defender ended up sent off anyway. Down to ten men, Cyprus had to weather a second half in which Armenia completely took over possession and created chance after chance: shots from Narek Grigoryan, Eduard Spertsyan, Karen Nalbandyan and Karlen Hovhannisyan, plus a flurry of corner kicks, tested the home defense without the score ever budging.

Armenia racked up as many as six corner kicks in the second half alone, a reflection of pressure that never translated into goals. The territorial dominance showed clearly in the final stats.

The xG numbers calculated afterward, based on shot location, confirm the match was closer than the scoreline suggests: 1.034 for Cyprus against 1.745 for Armenia. In other words, the visitors generated more danger in terms of volume and shot positioning, but Cyprus's efficiency on its two clear first half chances ended up making the difference.

The result also stands in contrast to the pre-match projections, which gave Cyprus a 50% chance of winning against 27% for Armenia, with a draw at 23%, and expected goals of 2.12 for the hosts against 1.53 for the visitors. The final scoreline, a clean 2-0 with no response from Armenia, ended up being more decisive than that projection anticipated, though the way the second half played out, with Armenia dominating heavily, does resemble a tightly contested match.

What it means in the standings

With this result, Cyprus reaches 4 points in Group C2 of the Nations League, with a record of one win, one draw and one loss in three matches played. Armenia stays on 3 points, with one win and two losses in the same number of matches. The gap between the two sides in the table is just 1 point, while Montenegro, which did not play on this matchday, remains on top with a perfect record of wins.

Cyprus walks away with all three points and a curious story to remember: a goal on each of its first two real chances, a red card that went through VAR twice in the same minute, and a ten against eleven resistance that, this time, was enough.
