Barcelona ties down Raphinha through 2030 after goal-scoring run as a striker

Eleven goals in seven games playing as a striker. That number alone explains why Barcelona wasn't willing to wait another day to lock up Raphinha. The club has just announced an extension to his contract through 2030, coming right as the Brazilian puts together the best start to a season of his career.

Sporting director Deco confirmed the agreement this week, closing out a negotiation that came at the best possible time. Raphinha, 29, was under contract through 2028, but his numbers forced the club's hand: thrust into the role of emergency replacement for Robert Lewandowski up front, the winger has responded with a scoring streak nobody saw coming at this stage.

It's not the only move on the renewal front. Deco has closed three deals in total since the transfer window shut earlier this month, and the other two carry names straight out of La Masia: Marc Bernal and Xavi Espart.

The academy products who earned their spot

Bernal, 19, will sign through 2031 after establishing himself as the natural first option to relieve the midfield pairing of Pedri and Rodri since the start of the season. It's a significant vote of confidence for a player who hasn't even turned 20 yet.

Espart, also 19, will extend his deal through 2030 after locking down a permanent spot in the first team this summer. His story at the club carries a distinctive twist: he arrived at La Masia as a central midfielder, made his debut under Hansi Flick as a right back last season, and has been used as a left back this campaign. That's precisely where he's made the most noise, with his performances keeping both João Cancelo and Alejandro Balde out of the lineup for most of the season.

Bernal and Espart belong to that 2007 generation that already sounds like something special at Barcelona, the same class that also includes Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí. Seeing them sign long-term extensions is no coincidence: the club wants them tied down before outside interest heats up even further.

For Raphinha, meanwhile, the new deal arrives as recognition of a level of performance that goes beyond the raw numbers. Filling in for a striker of Lewandowski's caliber was no simple task, and the Brazilian has done it while scoring at a pace that probably surprised even himself. For now, Barcelona can breathe easy: three important pieces of the project, secured for the long haul.
