Nice stuns Lille 2-1 despite being outplayed on possession

Lille controlled the ball, fired off 21 shots and still walked away empty handed at the Allianz Riviera. Nice took all three points with a 2-1 win built on a rival's mistake and one clinical finish, while the visitors were left to rue a night in which they did almost everything but score enough.

The first blow came by accident. In the 21st minute, a rebound deflected into his own net off Nathan Ngoy to put Nice up 1-0 without the hosts having to force the issue much. The game looked settled, but Lille pulled one back twelve minutes later when Ayase Ueda connected with a through ball from Maurits Kjaergaard to make it 2-1 in the 78th minute, in a goal that needed a VAR check before it was confirmed.

From there, Lille threw everything forward in search of the equalizer. Olivier Giroud, on from the bench, tried a header; Nabil Bentaleb and Tiago Santos also had a go from outside the box, and there were even six minutes of stoppage time for the visitors to keep pressing. But the scoreboard did not move again, and Nice held on for the win.
