Sporting CP blows 2-0 lead after Debast red card, held to draw by Arouca

Sporting controlled the first 16 minutes, but Debast's red card let Arouca fight back to a 2-2 draw in stoppage time.

Sporting CP blows 2-0 lead after Debast red card, held to draw by Arouca

Sporting CP raced to a 2-0 lead in just 16 minutes against Arouca at the Estadio Jose Alvalade and looked to have the match under control. It ended 2-2, with the hosts down to ten men from the second half and a nerve-wracking finish decided in stoppage time.

The start could not have gone better for the home side. In the 2nd minute, off a corner kick, Goncalo Inacio headed home from close range off an assist from Maxi Araujo to make it 1-0. Fourteen minutes later, Luis Suarez finished with his right foot inside the box, set up by Ivan Fresneda, for the 2-0. Sporting was dominating, creating chances, and everything pointed to a comfortable result.

But the match changed completely in the 53rd minute, when Zeno Debast was sent off for a foul on Gabriel Rukavina. Down to ten men, Sporting began to wear down, and Arouca, with Barbero as its main threat, grew into the game.

The equalizer took shape in the closing stretch. In the 76th minute came a penalty on Barbero inside the box, confirmed by VAR after a review at the 77th. Jose Fontan converted it with his left foot in the 80th minute to make it 2-1. The equalizer arrived just six minutes later: Dylan Nandin finished from close range in the 86th minute to seal the final 2-2, which held despite seven minutes of stoppage time played afterward.

The numbers behind the match

The stats reflect how the game split between its two halves. Sporting had more possession and more clear-cut chances early on, but Arouca finished with more total shots and shots on target, a reflection of its surge after the red card.

The xG generated in the match, calculated from shot locations, gives Arouca 2.57 against Sporting's 1.715, a number that confirms what played out on the field: despite trailing by two goals for most of the match, the visitors generated more danger in their comeback than the hosts managed in their fast start.

That figure contrasts sharply with the pre-match projections, which gave Sporting an 80% chance of winning against 6% for Arouca and 14% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.96 for the hosts and just 0.81 for the visitors. None of that held up: the team expected to win comfortably ended up dropping two points at home after being reduced to ten men.

What the result means

With this draw, Sporting CP moves to 15 points in the Liga Portugal, with a record of 4 wins and 3 draws with no losses so far this season, sitting third in the table, 4 points behind Arouca in the standings. Arouca, for its part, now has 11 points with 3 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses, left with the feeling of having rescued something that seemed impossible after falling behind 2-0 and facing a numerical disadvantage that ultimately worked in its favor.

Debast's red card marked the turning point of a match that Sporting had under control and ended up letting slip in barely half an hour of play with ten men on the field.
