Yusuf's hat trick exposes D.C. United's flaws in New England Revolution rout

The New England Revolution ran riot at Audi Field, routing D.C. United 3-0 in an MLS matchup settled by one unmistakable star: Alhassan Yusuf, who scored a hat trick that laid bare the home side's defensive shortcomings.

A match controlled from start to finish

D.C. United had the first looks at goal, with attempts from Matti Peltola, Jackson Hopkins and Kimito Nono in the opening minutes failing to find the target. United might reach the locker room still in the fight, Yusuf struck again: in the 44th minute, off a cross from Jack Harrison, he finished with his right foot from close range to make it 2-0, a psychological blow that left the capital club with little left to offer.

The second half followed the same script. The New England Revolution kept dictating play and creating chances through Carles Gil, Dor Turgeman and Jack Harrison, who was decisive in his team's relentless work down the right flank. The third blow landed in the 65th minute: another Harrison cross, and once again Yusuf, this time heading home through the middle of the box to complete his hat trick and seal the final 3-0. D.C. United tried to pull one back through Nathan Ordaz, Tai Baribo and Lucas Bartlett, but none of their attempts beat the visiting keeper.

The numbers confirm the gap

The statistics clearly reflected the visitors' dominance over the full 90 minutes.

The New England Revolution also came out ahead in our own post-match xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken during the game: 3.145 compared to the home side's 2.276, a figure that confirms the visitors' scoreline advantage was backed up by the volume and quality of the chances they created.

A rout that flew in the face of the preview

The result strayed far from what we had projected before kickoff. Our preview gave D.C. United a 42% chance of winning, a 25% chance of a draw, and just 33% to the New England Revolution, with a tight expected goals forecast (1.77 for the home side and 1.55 for the visitors, a combined 3.32). What happened at Audi Field was almost the exact opposite: the team tabbed as the favorite ended up shut out and thrashed, while the visitors, seen as the least likely winners, took all three points with authority and without a scare.

What the result leaves behind

With this win, the New England Revolution cement their hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points, nine clear of D.C. United, who remain in ninth place with 24 points. For the capital club, the loss exposes yet again a defensive fragility that has dogged them for a while, while for New England, the night will be remembered for Alhassan Yusuf's individual showcase, as he all but decided the match on his own with his three goals.
